Old AIG ads seen with new irony today
I'm a long time collector of National Geographic magazines going back to the early '60s. Just the other day I pulled out some copies from 2004 and noticed a series of AIG ads on the back covers that I hadn't taken note of.
In light of the bailout of AIG, I… Read full post »
American Faces of War from 1918
Ninety years ago a remarkable record of sketches from World War One were produced by Librairie Dorbon-Aine. Each copy had the binding of an artist's field sketchbook containing 62 pages of sketches made in the field in WWI of the American Army by the French artist Lucien Jonas. There were different… Read full post »
Karl Rove: redefining what it means to be the sexiest man

Like the quiet Clark Kent, Karl possesses a second identity:

Always pushing the envelope is SEXY!

A jokester is SEXY!

A witness to history is SEXY!

No Man is an Island, but how about a Squirrel??

Paws down here is your winner! The Squirrel may not look like much, but he has it where it counts--hidden for this post to keep it rated "G." Eat your heart out contenders! (By the way, some have tried to portray the Squirrel as a troll--accept no imitations, this… Read full post »
Vintage Open Salon Covers, Part One
One feature of Open Salon that never lingers for too long are the covers, unlike the posts. Here's a selection from my early days on OS when it was still in beta. I don't whether the OS staff archives covers or not, but here's Part 1 of my archive. You'll notice… Read full post »
No November surprises look likely here!
57.1 % Obama to 41.7% McCain at 9:47 PM.
58.1% Obama to 40.7% McCain at 9:55 PM with 12% reporting.
61.3% (835,401) Obama to 37.5% (511.544) McCain at 10:08 PM with 21% reporting. Read full post »
This morning I saw a link for a house in Phoenix that is for sale. It is the former home of John and Cindy McCain. Upon viewing the photos I was struck at many similarities to William Randolf Heart's castle in San Simeon, CA.
I visited the castle in 1982… Read full post »
There have been a great number of delicious recipes posted on OpenSalon since last spring. I wanted to add a favorite of mine, as well. I first had this stew around 1964 when my maternal grandfather prepared it for a Christmas Eve dinner at my grandparents' house. Because I was… Read full post »
Following up on my post from last week, I have some more foliage shots taken around my place north of New York City. These photos were taken both yesterday afternoon and this morning. The colors in this area are at their peak now and many leaves are now falling as the… Read full post »
There is a building in Manhattan that holds many memories for me. My maternal grandfather was a dentist in the city for forty years starting in the late '20s. For thirty of those years, he leased an entire floor at 1 East 57th Street.
Surprisingly, my grandfather never took any… Read full post »

When you live in a house surrounded by a forest of oak trees, it's just a matter of time before mice invade the dwelling. Thanks to some great sheriff patrolling by Snookette, the two year old female tuxedo cat, shown above, we are now 100% mouse-free. There have been… Read full post »
Close to this time 24 years ago we we had just watched the second debate of Reagan and Mondale, just as we had this week with Obama and McCain. From my archives, here is a look back at that time.

Suddenly everyone has the same avatar

Just a little while ago when I clicked on "Most Recent" I noticed that all of the avatars were the same. Likewise, clicking on "Editor's Pick" and "Most Read" had the same result. Is anyone else seeing this on their screen?
Tallest photo on OpenSalon?
Here's a photo I took last year of the Citicorp Building and the surrounding east side neighborhood as seen from Rockefeller Center on a hazy day. Whether this is the tallest photo on OpenSalon at this point in time, I'm not sure. Read full post »
My kitchen table

Butcher block kitchen table in 1988 in the cottage on my grandparents' farm.

The same kitchen table 20 years later in our kitchen.
Following Stellaa's interesting post on her family kitchen table, I have added my own tale to the mix. This table was purchased a year… Read full post »

News-Hour: Krugman and Meltzer on the bailout (Update)

I liked the opinions that Paul Krugman and Allan Meltzer of Carnegie Mellon expressed on this evening's News-Hour regarding the bailout plans. If I happened to be a stenographer, I'd put the transcript here, but I'm not. So tune in and check it out.
UPDATE: Here's the transcrip… Read full post »
The Sequel to "The Spiro of '76"

From the archives in the old barn, comes a follow-up to my post on Saturday.
Providence: Part Six
In September, 1972 when I started in as a freshman at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) an architectural studio class commenced during that semester that would have an important impact on the future of Providence over a decade later.
The class, taught by Professor Gerald Howes was looking a… Read full post »
For Part Five of my Providence series, I am discussing a study and publication that was developed in the late 1950s. Through a book dealer in Providence, I was able to purchase a copy of the 1959 publication "College Hill: A Demonstration Study of Historic Urban Renewal." This study and… Read full post »
