I've been running a business for awhile, but only lately have I done so on my own. In early December, I opened the doors on my graphics design shop on the square in downtown Hamilton.

My front window looks out to the Courthouse, which is in the final stages of a large renovation project. For years, the barricades and dumpsters, trucks and hard-hat wearing workmen have owned this lot. But just now, the fences are down, the dumpsters are hauled away, and the business of the County has begun to move back in and take up quarters.

In the spring, I can imagine the trees budding out in acid greens, terra-cotta urns of colorful flowers contrasting against green lawns, people pausing to sit and look around. I imagine it will be a place to meet, a chance to chat, an invitation to take a brisk walk or leisurely stroll.

For now, I take pleasure in the play of light on the bare walls, the cast shadows of my window signage, the zebra head creating its own companion, the sudden movement of reflection when cars park in just the right place.

This desk is inviting, and work is a joy. So far, I am doing well and staying busy. Sometimes, I am able to carve moments for my own projects. I found some old tin-type photographs, portraits of people whose faces speak to me. I am reminded of history as I restore their features, and feel I am coming to know each person as an individual. The bridegroom looks worried, the grandmother has earned respect, the children are fidgety. I know they want to be remembered, so they accept my offer of friendship. Probably, they will like hanging on these walls. The view is great.
