Bio
Once upon a time this writer was a reporter/photographer and columnist for a large weekly newspaper in New York City, worked at the Center for Publishing at N.Y.U., worked at Kirkus for one crazy semester and eventually was an editor at Scholastic. After two very troubling years on cable television in New York City, this writer was voted off the island once and for all. Today this writer is a full-time student and substitute teacher living in reduced circumstances. She is ever hopeful and even though her stomach may rumble from time to time, she is usually somewhat reasonably well fed. Most importantly this writer is a recovering or former New Yorker, (recovering seems more apt), who is quite happily transplanted in Wisconsin. She blooms where she is planted.

"Is it necessary for you to dress like that in public?"

Rate: 11 Flag

 RisingTidePurse

This is very similar to the Rising Tide purse I was carrying today.

"Is it really necessary for you to dress like that in public?" my sister asked.

Maybe it's just me, but I think running about town is not a clothing optional activity.  It's these togs or nothing.

"You should really try to make some sort of effort.  We''ll find something for you to wear.  You're not wearing that.  Not in public."

My ensembles were often deemed unworthy of being seen.  This was no time to argue.  My sister's terror alert system was stuck on Code Red for the past three days.  It was the Trinity.  A quick succession of Gucci, Pucci and Coach luggage that my sister insists on using as a purse.

This is never a good sign.

The Coach luggage was currently in play.

My sister had, "DON'T MESS WITH ME!" flashing in warning signals all over her accessories.

This was no time to argue.

We made a quick run to Charity's home, raided her closet, outfitted me "properly" and drove into town.

We had some important business to take care of.  A score to settle.

We were dressed to kill.  And ready to do some damage.

When I read the title of this piece I immediately thought of my 20-yr-old and her ripped out jeans. Normally I subscribe to the "choose your battles" philosophy and try not to say anything when her choice of clothing isn't to my liking, but these jeans were ripped out under both back pockets and sometimes she wore tights under them and sometimes not... I can't imagine your outfit was worse than that!
mginmn, thank you for posting and maintaining an open mind. I think I dress very well, but my sister's sense of style and mine are very different. I was carrying a Rising Tide purse, and that was all my sister needed to see. I did not pass inspection.

With all due respect to Wisconsin, America's Dairyland is not the fashion capital of the world.
OEsheepdog, thanks for posting. I've missed you. How are you snuggles? ;) I know how much you care for me. I can sense that you were treading very lightly as you walked all over me. ;) He, he, he. ;)

I could not stop laughing yesterday when you posted that comment on my N.Y.U. story.

Honestly I was working that look I had going on today. Again, it's just that my style is very different than my sister's.

Sometimes it is just better to pacify than fight. Did you look that bad before or that good after?
Lunchlady 2, my sense of style is playful. Much like me. I will include one more detail.

The Rising Tide purse that I was carrying was the charcoal grey, floral pusrse. This purse made of 100 percent sheep wool, and crafted using the "ancient hand art technique of felting."

I am considerably younger than my sister, so that is another issue with our style differences. My look is more young, edgy and yet playful. My sister's style is more classic. When my sister was done with me we had nearly the entire set of Coach luggage in tow.

Cute! Words we've all heard or said at some point in our lives!

My sense is that unless one is involved in some kind of art performance piece, public sphere clothing should be different from private sphere clothing. No pajamas, lingerie, boxers, flip-flops on the train, thank you very much. The public sphere makes different demands, and as such the costuming of one's public persona requires a different sensibility. We do not want to look like we're taking a nap or getting out of the shower on the public stage.
Kyle D., thanks for posting. These are words I often hear from my sister. It is an ongoing issue. :)

I'm hooked . . . now I want to know what damage entails.

And I'm so thankful that I never hear that speech anymore - my mother tried to be easy about it, but I was a baby dyke, and she was more "church lady."
Monsieur Chariot, thank you for posting and for visiting. I understand. You do make some excellent points.

I beg to differ though. There have been times in the past when I worn some kind of lingerie as a blouse. But in those instances I always cover up a bit with a fun sweater.

Owl, thanks for posting. I understand. Charity is more like Temple Lady. There is a huge runway in my family's temple here. Only the best from Milan and Paris are seen there.

Hope
Don't worry about it! I don't look at the purse anyway. Although, I do prefer smaller purses so there is more room for me to check out the body!
totalcreep, thank you for posting and for visiting. Hmmn...Really. Do you now? ;)

This Rising Tide purse is the biggest purse that I have. I actually do like to carry a micro purse most often. I am a petite girl, and I cannot be expected to carry around a huge purse all day. It's just not happening.

Hope
I am not a purse kinda girl but that Rising Tide bag is really thrilling to me. I think I am in love.

My cousin doesn't mind a girl who dresses to a different drummer. He is very artistic in culinary kind of way. You didn't think I had forgotten did you?

Now, spill. What damage? I've got flu going around my house and I can't be waiting up til all hours while you keep me on edge wondering if you have been thrown out of another grocery store or something.
mamoore, thank you for posting. You always make me smile, and of course thoughts of your cousin awaiting my hand make me giggle. :)

It's those creative types who like to have fun with fashion, like me.

All I can say about what happened today is that we were there on a mission. When all was said and done, our mission was accomplished.

Stay tuned. :)

Hope
And then what? More more more! You're actually on speaking terms with your sister after that? I'm intrigued.
Polly, thank you for posting and for visiting. Charity can be delightfully scrunchy at times. This is how Charity speaks. You've got to love her. :)

Hope
So did you really kill someone? Lovely little snatch of life.
madcelt, thanks for posting. I am about to write it now. What you see here every day is the product of my fingers tapping on my keyboard to capture these moments as they happen. I am not pulling any of this writing out of some old file.

I am sure I am stating the obvious for many. My words have that just scribbled look. I sometimes do not have time for polish.
