Paulo sits on the edge of Hope's bed. Guarding her closely. While guarding himself. Guarding his heart. His less than perfect heart.
All the while Hope sleeps. And dreams of peace. Of simpler times. Without so much pain for all around her. Without bad decisions. For her family. As a whole. Without her. Always on the sidelines. Outside. Looking in. Wondering why. Wondering how. It ever happened.
They're so mean. When they talk. Can't make them like her. No longer trying. Giving up the burden long ago. Travelling on her own. Through life. Always travelling light. With no loose gear.
No longer wanting them involved. Over involved.
Too many of their attempts to interfere. Repeated attempts to meddle. All the while, in every way trying to control Hope.
Mistreated.
Hope no longer searches for reasons why she was never included. Never wanted. Never accepted. Within her own family.
Unattended puzzle pieces. Lost. Misplaced.
Mistaken.
Finally ready. To go. To move forward. All on her own.
Despite her guards. Who insist Hope not go alone. Not go it alone. Not always be alone.
Paulo looks at Hope's peaceful face. As Hope sleeps. And dreams. He reaches out. Touches her bangs. Too long now. Sweeps them aside. As Hope stirs.
Long eyelashes flutter. Eyes open. On Paulo. As he looks right at Hope. And hopes. Too.
Right along with Hope.
Yet is so misunderstood.
