Matthew offers to hold Isaiah, and as he gets close to Hope to take Isaiah in his arms, his shaky feelings of resolve start to crumble yet again.
Then comes the avalanche of feelings as he has Hope at arm's length from him.
Matthew searches Hope's face for a sign of encouragement, but he sees none. Meanwhile Hope looks right into Matthew's eyes, then looks down again, and struggles to keep herself from sighing.
They are so close and yet so far.

It's important to keep in mind the history that Hope's and Matthew's characters share. Ten years ago they loved one another, but unfortunately then things ended for other reasons.
So, yes, now there are still all of these complex emotions that bubble up to the surface in their moments together.
