This is what I saw today:

A cute little vampire bat inside his cool blue vampire bat habitat at our zoo.  It is new and tucked away in a dark part of a cave like structure.  Right next to the tank with the boa and the piranhas.

I waited my turn to get up next to the glass.  I hoped that I could get a good shot of one of the cute little boogers.  A family was at the glass ahead of me.  The adults moved away one at a time, leaving a sweet little golden-haired girl, face pressed against the glass.

I lined up my camera and took the shot.  As I completed the shot, the edge of my lens brushed the glass of the enclosure.

The bat went... well, bats.  He lept fromt he rock and flapped back and forth in front of the glass like a prop from a Scooby Doo episode.

The small child next to me lept back from the glass and flapped her arms in the air, hopping from foot to foot and screaming in terror.

The child and the bat mirrored each other for some brief time.

The child ran after her family.

The bat returned to the rest of the bats in the back of the enclosure.

I giggled.

Sometimes you just gotta laugh, and when it really needs to happen, the universe will find a way of deliving a punchline that you won't ignore.

I can't believe I (almost) missed this one!!! We love bats - I've never quite understood why so many people are scared of them, I mean aside from the Dracula myths. In our house, when we see bats, we see it as a message to confront our fears (or that we will be confronting fears, like it or not.).

I guess the little girl sort of confronted her fears, sort of . . . Now that I think about it, since I've now read this post, that would mean that I am or will be confronting fears. Great.

Anyway, extra points for using the word schaednfreude in your tags!
