I'm an illustrator in my day job, but I keep leaking with other things that need to get out. I compiled a book "Miss You, Pat: Collected Memories of NY's Bravest of the Brave, Captain Patrick J. Brown" which enables me to die knowing I did one good thing. But I have more up my sleeve!

Caution Tape in the Ramble of Central Park - Photo Essay

Rate: 17 Flag

I should have made a bee-line directly down to Union Square to buy art  supplies in my tight schedule of a day. But there was Central Park, a vast  distraction of jeweled hues that defied me to add “past” to the word peak.
I dipped into it tentatively, almost guiltily, as if it were an ice cream cone,  intending only to lick at the sides. But I was drawn into the Ramble.

I had been lost in the Ramble more than once before. The first time was when I was a young art student: a man walked past, quickly groped my breast, and disappeared.  Unknown to me at that time, the Ramble was used for gay trysts. There was no danger of running into any of that today. It was full of leaf peepers and lovers, bird watchers and arborists. Much of it had been closed off due to snow damage from the freak storm just before Halloween. Caution tape was the yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree. And many others.

These massive trunks almost begged me to look up, not down at the straggling reminders of their vulnerability. And so I did.

tupelo

"Do you happen to know anything about these trees?"I asked these gentlemen. They told me that the tupelo above is 150 years old and quite well-known in these circles. They informed me that the camouflaged trunk's name is London Plane, and that it is hardy against urban pollution. It was wonderful not to google this info, but just happen upon some native New Yorkers with a passion to share.

On my way out I serendipitously asked another man with binoculars just what he was looking at.  I hit the jackpot as he turned out to be Ken Chaya  who has mapped the 20,000 trees of Central Park. He generously shared some of his knowledge and enthusiasm, pointing out European lindens and sourwoods to me, as well as the nuthatch who was making his way down one.

My day's detour into the Ramble was just the kind of adventure I love stumbling into. Autumn in New York. There should be a song.

What a wonderful experience and thank you so much for sharing it and your beautiful photos here.

Now I know I MUST visit New York in the autumn, God willing. Breathtakingly stunning.

The last photo with the contrasting light suited man is a classic.
Everybody who has ever walked the Ramble has gotten lost at least one time, DS.

I now feel I know it as well as anybody, but if I stay away for several months, I manage to get lost myself on return. It is spectacular.

There is a special place near to the shore of the Boat Lake that has a nice climb up a babbling brook kind of thingy with huge boulders involved. I always climb there...and imagine it to be a climb up a mountain, even though it is only yards long.

Beautiful pix. Sorry to hear about the damage. Haven't been there since early spring. Hope to get there next week for a visit...and hope even more that I do not get lost!!!
You lucky ducky! What a delicious NYC walk. If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to return as a squirrel and live in that messy nest way up in that locust tree, or the tupelo. When you're a squirrel, Central Park must be the Palm Springs of real estate. And squirrels get to build anywhere they want, for free....no annoying bank loans, just take the best tree and start dragging your sticks up there.
Incredible! Makes me miss Central Park!! Did you know that Tupelo honey is the most valuable honey in the world?? It has an amazing flavor. Blessings and peace...
Hi dirndl. Those pics and Holiday's music made me wish all the more that I'd arranged my life so as to be there for today's meet-up. It also reminded me that it's been ages since I strolled through Central Park. I hope to rectify that before much longer. Thanks for the post.
Gorgeous colors. Not having been in NY for a good 10 years, I would get lost trying to find the Ramble.
Linda ~ Yes, you must visit! Thank you!

Frank ~ Isn't it great to know you can get totally lost in the middle of nature in the middle of NYC? Thanks for visiting and enjoying :)

greenheron ~ love your analogy there!

BP ~ I knew it was a Van Morrison song :) Thanks for the info and visit!

Abrawang ~ Today is cloudy and chilly so I nailed the perfect day for a visit. But Central Park is always magical. You'll get there :)

Stim ~ that's part of the experience. But I think all lost marbles and loose nuts roll into it :)
How cool - and I love that you came upon just the right people for your questions about trees! I feel sorry for those lovely trees, though - I hope the ones with the caution tape around them won't have to be cut down!
love the photos....love the old trees!
Ah, Sharon, this is just wonderful. I always try to remember to look up. (Literally.) ~r
Alysa ~ the taped trees seem fine, just that some branches were broken above. I am sure there was devastation I didn't see, but this was an upbeat day. Plus they are all in such good hands there.

Poppi ~ Thank you! I am not normally a nature-snapper, but they really had such personality :)

Joan ~ Especially when everyone around you is looking down texting. Thanks for visiting me on the stroll.
Beautiful Sharon. I so miss NY in Autumn (and so glad I got to meet you in NY last Sept). I'm surprised at all the leaves after that snowstorm. That last picture could be a scene from a movie. thanks for the walk through Central Park!
So many smiles. A trunk that look like a torso with “buns” and others that look like people plunged head-first into the dirt, feet in the air. The walking white-suited man is classic! So Seurat. (Scroll it down to just crop off the sunsplash at the bottom. ) ;-)
Whatta treat.
Gorgeous, and probably more so in person, and how lucky you were to happen upon two knowledgeable tree lovers! I do love the look of that camo tree trunk.
I was in the park yesterday...and will post a couple of pix later today. Stop by and take a look.

f.
trilogy ~ the leaves are still up way up here in Beacon! I'll be raking into January. But yes, nothing like autumn in New York City.

Gary ~ I thought all of that you mentioned, but not until after I uploaded did it reveal itself. "great minds see alike...?" :)

bell ~ I am torn between snapping and just walking/enjoying. This time I managed both :)

frank ~ I will! thanks for the heads up!
Thanks sharing this little detour with us. I' m getting nostalgic; I grew up in Queens and I miss the change of seasons. I omly get two seasons now: wet and not so wet. R
Haven’t been on OS much lately so just seeing these beautiful photos now. I love what you’ve captured with the fall colours. Up here, the trees are pretty much bare at this point so it was nice to view a last gasp of the season. Plus, "Autum in New York" is one of my favourite Billie Holiday performances.

Is that Leon Redbone or Tom Wolfe walking through the park in that last photo?
Trudge ~ King of Corona? C'mon back and let's tour Louis Armstrong's house!

V.A. ~ I was caught off guard, forgetting how beautiful a park can be after living in more natural surroundings the last 10 years. (Well, granted, not just any park :) The guy was a young Hispanic, but as Gary mentioned--almost a Seurat-type, as I almost called the post "Wednesday in the Park with George." Thanks for catching up!
@Dirndl, funny you should bring that old Paul Simon song up. Besides, being one of my all time feel good songs, I used to run with a guy named Julio and guess what my wife's name is? I'll give you a hint, it starts with the letter "R".
Corrections: Besides, being one of my all time favorite feel good songs, I used to run with a guy named Julio (in Astoria not Corona) and guess what my wife's name is? I'll give you a hint, it starts with the letter "R".
To be honest, I always will read and comment when I see a dreidel post , but for reasons unknown ,your posts keep not showing up and I miss them. I see this was written on the 11th. WTF.
Such a cool thing that you didn't have to google but had real life humans tell you the info you needed. I loved this trip through the Ramble and the writing that was inspired by it. How I miss NY and your posts don't help ;>(
Trudge ~ There also is "Ice King of Corona" with THE best Italian ice.

fernsy ~ what a sweet thing to say--guess all your favorites were fast and furious and pushed me off the loop! I don't send out notices when I post...just feel funny doing that. SO lousy at "PR." :) Thanks for catching up w/the stroll.
This glorious ramble nearly slipped past me. Glad I remembered seeing the title before it disappeared from the feed. Your photos should be hanging in a gallery, Sharon.
Oh I miss my NYC autumn...Thanks for the colorful splash of nostalgic memories here.
