Divorce Bard's Blog

...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

February 13
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Divorce Bard no more.

So, you know, here's the deal.

When I started doing this, I was basically blogging my divorce.  I had started a blog under my real name, where I was going to blog my divorce, because I thought it would be awfully clever to blog my divorce in verse.  That was just… Read full post »

A Rose by Any Other

My daughter was part of a big event at her middle school tonight.  Big like, this huge group of 6th and 7th graders big.  I’m not sure where the 8th graders go, or what they do, when they receive some sort of honor from the school, or the school board, or… Read full post »

In My Kitchen

The oddest thing just happened.  I’m working on a poem just now, a narrative of a Kenyan folk tale I found last year.  I had struggled with it for weeks – or more accurately, I had avoided sitting down to it for weeks – and then somehow tonight, things started to… Read full post »

A Faded Drawing

I was cleaning up the other day.  There’s still all this stuff, just stuff left over from our separation, that came with me in boxes and didn’t really have a reason to.  So I was tossing out stuff, and I came across some of the artwork that my daughter had… Read full post »

An Incident.

A car went off the road, and hit a tree.
An ambulance was summoned to the scene.
Two kids were fine, as far as all could see.
And one, a girl, is dead at seventeen.

I knew her just a bit, when she was small.
At seven, she was headstrong. Pretty. Bright.
Now ten… Read full post »

This is a vid-cap of Luja Wang’s right hand.  You can find the video here:

There have been a small number of women that I’ve known, who have had hands that stopped me.  It’s hard to explain th… Read full post »

There are a thousand wishes I could make.
Tomorrow, maybe twenty thousand more.
And I could hope your hearts may never break,
That charm, and luck, might open ev'ry door...

I could.  But really, I'm not much of one
For dreamy thoughts of happy ever after.

Out to Lunch #2. Monday Jan 30, 2012

The hours that I've recently been keeping
Have lately been preventing me from sleeping.
As well, my writing needs a little thought;
It doesn't feel as centered as it ought.
I've felt it slide - if things keep getting worse,
I'll have to be content with... (cough) "light verse."… Read full post »

Chicken Pot Pie #2. Sunday Jan 29, 2012

Tonight my children dined on something new,
Partaking in my sav'ry pie debut.
The pie that doesn't scan was such a hit,
We've eaten nearly ev'ry single bit.
When I had done, God how my stomach sagged -
And then I bragged, and bragged, and bragged, and bragged. Read full post »

As much as I would miss your closeness, still
No memories exist, of you and I.
Perhaps tomorrow night, a small one will.
Not knowing helps the days go idly by.

Tu ne fais pas partie de mes memoires
Mais tu me manques beaucoup, encore ce soir
Demain, peut-etre, je pourrais te voir
Pourquoi me faut-il de ne pas savoir

Chicken Pot Pie. Thursday Jan 26, 2012

Okay... It's time I faced a resolution.
I've promised many times that I would do it.
I've planned a bit, and now the execution -
'Cause if I don't, the kids would say, "I KNEW it."

Tonight I spent the evening caref'lly shopping.
I have the stuff!  Tomorrow… Read full post »

Goodnight #45. Wednesday Jan 25, 2012

Another night with nothing much to say.
But there.  I've gone and said it anyway.

Goodnight #44. Tuesday Jan 24, 2012

Though some may call an empty head enlight'ning,
When I sit down to write, I find it fright'ning.
Tomorrow morning, I may feel restored,
With angst and gloom and woe.  Tonight I'm bored.

Ick. Monday Jan 23, 2012

Somewhere, there's something sticky on the floor.
I found it with my sock.  Just walking by.
I started in the kitchen, t'ward the door,
And felt it... somewhere.  Nothing caught my eye,
I couldn't stop just then, I'm not sure why,
And now... it's out there still, and lying… Read full post »

Jitney #2. Sunday Jan 22, 2012

I had the kids today.  Just here and there,
And now and then.  So maybe I should say,
Today I jitneyed children ev'rywhere -
My two, and friends we picked up on the way.
I have them both tomorrow then, as well.
Or three, or seven - I can… Read full post »

Fledgling #2. Saturday Jan 21, 2012

It snowed last night, and then all morning, too.
I went outside a little after one,
To shovel - there was plenty there to do:
The walk, the car... when ev'rything was done,

I thought a cup of coffee might be nice.
I walked to town, and passed… Read full post »

Support Network #2. Friday Jan 20, 2012

Had coffee with another dad today.
Divorced.  We try to, ev'ry week or so.
We generally have enough to say
To fill an hour, before we have to go.

We talk about how much the kids are growing
(His two are very close in age to mine)

Goodnight #43. Thursday Jan 19, 2012

If I had any sense, I'd go to bed,
And leave this stunning masterpiece unsaid...
I do.  I'll write tomorrow night, instead.

Hang on, he's got it.  Yep.  Okay.  Okay...
Hey what a SHOT!  He got it IN!  Yeah, TWO!
...so how're the kids?  Did you guys get away?
Hang on - he's got it.  Yep.  Okay.  Okay...
Aw MAN!... For Christmas?  Take an extra day?
Not me.  Oh… Read full post »

Solace. Tuesday Jan 17, 2012

Okay, sometimes I get a little bleak,
And moan about my prospects being weak,
And wax rhapsodic over things I've lost,
Or tedious, about how much they cost,
Or angry, over turns my life has taken,
Regretful, that my kids may feel forsaken,
Entrapped, by circumstance, and money lenders,… Read full post »

Other. Monday Jan 16, 2012

And yet were I to know you, this could end,
And air become less shimmering, and need,
Desire, and heart, might all be just pretend.
Then only in a memory, this seed
That never even took its root, would flower,
Unnamed, untouched, and jealous of its power.

Unrequited. Sunday Jan 15, 2012

A previously unimagined need,
Unheard, unspoken, barely grazed by speech,
Now given name, and license to mislead.
I feel you here, but somehow out of reach.

Anonymous #14. Saturday Jan 14, 2012

Come sit.  I haven't seen you for a year.
Here, turn your back to me.  Put up your hair.
Just, yes...  No, tie it.  Just above your ear.
Undo your collar, so your neck is bare,

That's all.  I'll put my hand just here, and do
Your shoulder.… Read full post »

Involute. Friday Jan 13, 2012

Returning to a normal shape or size,
Or state.  I looked it up.  I didn't know.
A present, really.  Borne on lips, and eyes;
A complex notion, more than just hello,

But English still.  A jewel in your hand,
Just offered, just like that.  There may be more,… Read full post »
