...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Tacos. Friday Mar 12, 2010

Rate: 3 Flag

On Friday nights we have a simple meal
Before our movie.  Tacos, made with beef
From earlier this week.  And I'll unseal
Some sour cream.  Its shelf life will be brief,
And maddening.  It doesn't come in small
Containers.  No concession to a dad
Who uses it so rarely, if at all.
I open it, and know it's going bad
Before I see another taco night.
I've never grown accustomed to the sight:
Sometime midweek She's home, the kids go back,
And soon the sour cream goes fuzzy black.

The sour cream to black says so much. I'd like to tell you this changes soon, but it won't for a long time. It's going to become more doable. (But that doesn't help, does it?) Keep writing. The writing does help.
D: This is so real. The simplicity of life often reveals the complexity. I too am hoping it will get easier and easier.
If I could tell you how often I've thrown out nearly full containers of aged sour cream. But, I never thought of it as symbolic. Your hidden theme was discovered by each of your commenters so far. This order of comment is typical. Scupper and trilogy always "get it" before I do.
Thanks scupper, thanks tril, thanks dlv.

scupper, I got a tip from a friend today, that reemphasized your comment that it becomes more doable. She told me to go to Wendy's with the kids, order baked potatoes, and ask for extra sour cream packets. Which is just bloody brilliant.

tril, thanks for the hope, and for declaring the poem real. It took me many years to write poetry at all, simply because I didn't feel my thoughts to be poetic enough. It didn't occur to me to write what I know.

dlv, it wasn't symbolic for me either until yesterday, and only then because I finally saw the pattern emerge. And you're right, why the hell can't they sell little containers?

BTW - you guys are just great. Thanks for coming by, all of you.
I have two words for you: baked potato. Also, sour cream is good on top of spicy egg dishes like rancheros or some omelettes.

Oh, and I liked the poem.
