...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Beautiful Day. Thursday Apr 1, 2010

Rate: 4 Flag

We looked for ladybugs along the beach
This sunny, nearly summer afternoon.
The river made them difficult to reach
In rocky spots.  But still we searched, and soon
The water's edge was poorer for our quest.
Some thirty found their home a hummus cup,
With sticks and leaves tossed in to make a nest
Where they'd been having trouble standing up.
We lost a few, with opening and closing.
As newer ones arrived, a few got out,
And three or four apparently were dozing,
Or something I don't want to think about.
Such prettiness made little sacrifice:
The ladybugs were given to their mother.
Perhaps they knew she needed something nice,
From me, for saying one thing or another.

Sounds like you need a comment from a "real" persons. Sounds like you have a very nice day with ladybugs & kids.
Such simple days are the ones we remember most in life. Not the big celebrations, the simple true days. Thank you for taking me back to that time for a moment.
Bard. I was happy for you as soon as I read your post title. I envy your ability to rhyme. You do it well and, seemingly, effortlessly.

@triology. How's that for a comment from a "real" person?
I am so very happy to be able to share this with people who read patiently, through grief and anxiety. Thanks, all.

tril: Yes, your comment was helpful, after the spam comment from the discount clothes hucksters. I do appreciate the way OS clears these out -- I've heard that it's a problem for independent bloggers.

rita: I think you're right. When I go through the snapshots in my mind, my favorites are days like this. The kids' excitement at the discovery (it was our first day of lady bugs) rained down on me from their voices, each time they rescued another one from the wet sand.

dlv: Thank you. That is an extremely high compliment. But there is effort, sometimes excrutiatingly so. The magic is that sometimes, the word that rhymes also opens my eyes to something I hadn't admitted to myself before.

Thanks again, everyone. You all make my day.
Can't keep such joy captive. Ladybugs. -r-
