Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Hello? Sunday Apr 4, 2010

Rate: 8 Flag

My daughter calls me every now and then
By telephone, the days she's with her mother.
It used to be she'd only call me when
She'd left behind some little thing or other.
But recently I feel I'm more a part
Of normal goings-on, within the day.
She calls, and asks a question just to start,
But normally, there's lots of things to say.
This evening she requested my narration
Of Easter, at the church where I've been going,
Then told me all about her celebration,
And presents that the Bunny's been bestowing.
Sometimes she simply puts the phone on speaker
And wanders 'round, describing this or that.
And even though it makes the signal weaker,
Each second of each small, impromptu chat
Acquaints me with the music of the spheres.
She wouldn't know the voice her father hears
Is something like an angel coming home.
When next I see her, she can read this poem.

:) I get this. My ten year old girl finally calls "just to chat." It means so much.
How touching and from the heart. I hope the closeness grows.
tears. so sweet, DB. This is the sweetest of things. R.
This was so so sweet. That father daughter bond is so intriguing to me. As a woman with three daughters! But I can see in this the relationship taking on a life of its own. Beautifully told.
Beautiful. There's something about a daughter.
My daughter and I speak and a slight tear flows.
She tossed me the flower bouquet when She wed.
My daughter said this to me at an outdoor wedding.
Catch Pop!
She smiled.
She's mature.
I refuse to be in the same car with her Mother. Enmity!
O, Mystery!
There were no bridesmaids and a violinist play waltzes.
I looked around to thank the musician. Eyes were closed.
My daughter understands better than I do. I wait on what?
I caught the bouquet on September 12th last autumn. Sigh.
You made e smile and sigh. I get it? Love and love her. Yes.
I chat on the phone with bill collectors. "O thanks for a call!
They get the message and say to me`Sorry, I got more calls!

of a the worlds troubles be free. A simple hut is enough for old geezers like me.
I bet you? too?
Very strong last lines... capturing the essence of the piece. Tender.
I got involved in thinking of you sharing your poems with your daughter. I thought, that's great. I do not know how old your daughter is, so I wondered if she appreciates them now. Then I concluded that she certainly will as she matures. They are definitely keepsakes.
Hello everyone. Thank you for stopping, rating, and commenting. Your attention is a treasure.

- sweetfeet: It really is cool, isn't it, when they pick up the phone just because they want to.

- FusunA: Thank you. I hope so too. I'll try to let her know I'm around, whenever she wants or needs to talk.

- kissinglessons: I'm so glad you like it. Thanks for the tears, it tells me I touched someone.

- tril: three daughters! When mine was an infant, I wished she had been triplets.

- Art James: man, if I'da knowed you was coming, I'da baked a cake. Welcome. I'll take your advice under advisement. But no promises -- I've figured out that February is cold.

- rita: I don't always get it right. Thanks for a pat on the back.

- dlv: She's old enough to read many of them, and many I'm holding back. When I write one that's G-rated (no angst), I read it to her. She knows I do this every day, and that it's frequently about her and her brother. I like her to know that poetry can be a way of expressing love. Gotta set the bar high, for when she starts dating.

Thanks again, everyone. Your servant.
Be careful what you wish for DB. I had twins when my oldest was 27 months old!!
This is painfully sweet.
