...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Tonight my daughter lost an earring back.
(She pierced her lobes a couple months ago.)
I'd thought I'd eat a bit, then hit the sack,
But when she called, I knew I had to go,
And give her what she needed for her ear;
Her studs, somehow, had wound up over here.
I twiddled through a little box I keep
To see if I could add a pretty finding.
But all my earrings in their little heap
Were putting off my hopes of just unwinding.
I picked two backs, and headed out the door.
I'd wondered lately, what I'd kept them for.

Nice, DB! Ha. Great topic. Kind of you to bring her the backs, too.

What a great Dad you are - your daughter has you wrapped - hey? There is nothing ordinary about this every day poetry... you amaze
Such a good dad! you kept them because you knew she'd need them one day.
You kept them to get your daughter back. Metaphorically speaking. Or your daughter lost them so that she could get you back - metaphorically speaking.
I love the notion of seemingly useless things set aside until the time for them to be important arrives!
You had kept them for this night. You just didn't know.
Some dads get it right. I think you must be one. Good verse--again.
And found your answer, Sir Dad.
Hi everyone. I learned the word "finding" last night from a Google search on "what is the back of an earring called" -- and I discovered that others have searched on this before (try it). I also learned that the backs I use are called butterflies, which I am sorry to say I wasn't able to work into the last couple of lines. Anyway...

kissinglessons, thanks for popping in. And what else could I do? That's what I get for cooking my dinner at the kids' bedtime.

Y Heron, long time no see. Yes, totally wrapped. That's her job, no?

trilogy, I guess I could say that's what I did. All I remember doing was shoving a little tiny box into the corner of a shelf. Thanks for the vote on my prescience.

ladyslipper, that's even better than prescience.

kit, I'm glad seemingly useless things can take on another life. Now, I still have this tangled marionette...

anna1, that seems to be the prevailing opinion! And the truest part of the sentence is, I didn't know.

scupper, I dearly hope so. Thanks for piping up -- I've been missing you.

Pilgrim, indeed... was it all about chivalry?

I still have lots of posts and backs I probably will never wear again -- I'll keep them for the next such event.

Thank you all, as always. Your avatars are like landing lights on the runway, late at night. I deeply appreciate every word of encouragement.

All for now.
I so love your honesty. Honestly!
