Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Sick Day. Wednesday May 12, 2010

Rate: 8 Flag

My son was sick today, and stayed with me;
His mom was in the city for a meeting.
He lay in bed and watched a DVD,
And then one more, and then while we were eating,
Admitted he had brought some homework, too.
It clearly wasn't what he'd planned to do.
A little after lunchtime She came by,
To pick him up and take him home to bed.
His earnest explanation as to why
His book remained unopened, still unread,
Was met with some frustration, and a look.
But nothing more.  The nap he later took,
For several hours, got me off the hook.

Kids shouldn't have to do homework when they're staying home from school - that's just wrong. And dads seem more aware of this rule than moms.

Glad you're off the hook.
Sick days with my kids were always so special. Especially when it was just one on one. I think sometimes they would "fake" it just because, and that was ok. Very sweet post, DB.
Well, it was nice that you and your son got to share something. Too bad it was guilt . . . . . Oh, the "look."
Sick days and homework. Glad for the wisdom of naps.
Sick days can be lovely._r
Sweet, DB. It's good to spoil sickish children. I used to play sick all the time just so I could get spoiled. It's excellent for a child to get a sick day now and then. Even better if there is no really sick sickness! Sweet poem!
Nice capital S there, too, db. Loved this.
ditto what ladyslipper said. i hated sick days because my mom was a worry wart. she'd take the day off to hover and really make me sick with her worry. but you bard, you're a cool nurse. what dvd did you watch?
Hello everyone. My son is much better, and he has found a better book to read. I'm glad he got that nap yesterday.

ladyslipper, thanks -- but it was more that I just needed to work, and the morning wasn't made for arguing. A DVD bought me many undisturbed phonecalls. (But thanks for the vote for dad.)

trilogy, you're right. I don't think he faked it, but he certainly used it.

Pilgrim, thanks. Hmm... it would appear one doesn't need to be separated to experience this?

anna1, yes. I am a great fan of napping, sick or well. He also got to eat in bed.

Joan, well hello there! And yes, I always enjoyed them myself, as well.

kissing, you little sneak. I hope you got plenty of TV when you did it.

Kim, aha: the uppercase is a convention I settle on, when my therapist advised against referring to "My Ex". If you care to rifle through some old posts here, you'll see it. It's a little tricky, since we use caps to refer to The Deity. But I needed something. Glad you liked it.

Renatta, you poor thing -- if you have kids though, don't let the pendulum swing too far in the other direction, eh?

Thanks again, everyone, always and nightly. More to come, in a second. (Stay tuned to this station.)
