Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Concert. Sunday May 23, 2010

Rate: 6 Flag

Their bows akimbo, half-sized players dressed
In black and white, new blouses, pants, and shoes,
A hundred of them, all face forward, lest
They start to misbehave, and miss their cues.
Behind them, older kids, then older still.
Three hundred altogether, in the space.
For each, a parent, maybe two, to thrill
At picking out their son's or daughter's face
From numbers worthy of a Berlioz.
An afternoon's reward, for those who chose
This tiny piece of where their childhood goes.

lovely, especially nice enjambment of lest.xox
Oh do I remeber the black & white...the viola & the bass. I've been to that concert."An afternoon's reward, for those who chose
This tiny piece of where their childhood goes."
Lovely, divorce bard. I will be there on Tuesday, watching my own half-sized player.

"This tiny piece of where their childhood goes."

That's beautiful. Thank you.
What a vision and a sound! 300??? Wow.

What a beautiful image, DB. My nephew is a full sized base player who recently graduated with his bachelors from the conservatory- but I can just picture him standing at the back row. Rated.
Thank you all for coming by, as always. I have been really remiss, the last few days, in responding to your comments. Tonight I hope I can make up for it.

kissinglessons, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for cutting me a break - "lest" is an odd word to end a line with.

trilogy, I'm glad you liked those lines. They were a huge struggle, and then they just sort of appeared out of nowhere.

froggy, have a wonderful time at the concert. Take a camera (I had to use my phone)

Linnnn, 300 was grander to look at than to hear! (But don't tell them that!)

FusunA, I am so happy to hear about your nephew, and I wish him all the luck in the world. And the youngest bass players on Sunday were the cutest, no question.

It is very gratifying to write, and have people respond with such personal memories. Thank you all.

Your servant.
An afternoon's reward so beautifully told.
