Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Travel Game. Tuesday June 29, 2010

It's funny I should be intimidated
By trav'ling with the kids for our vacation.
The challenge of the drive was overrated;
They just required a good preoccupation.
But even I turned out to be impressed
At how effective license plates could be.
No standardized State Education Test
Can be designed to gauge what I could see:
FIVE HOURS IN, they read each license plate
That passed us, on the left or on the right,
With hungry eyes, as though each distant state
Still absent from the list, might grace their sight
And give the one a point against the other.
And so they read: first one plate, then another,
Another, and another, and another,
For half the trip, the sister and her brother.

This is the first of a set of five, that I wrote while on vacation with the kids several states away, with nearly no internet access. Here are the titles in the set (it is 12:27am, and I'm too tired to do links, very sorry):

Having just driven through four states in three days with my nineteen year old daughter, I hear your pain.....and amusement. We also took my old dog just for aggravation....and because I love him too. great poem D. Bard....
Love your honesty here. Love what you were able to see as your children played the game you had planned for them. Expect they enjoyed the calm and the stimulation you provided for their thoughts.
