...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Sleeping Giant. Saturday July 17, 2010

Rate: 8 Flag

Some nights a love, a light, undecorated
Love, but nothing special, nothing grand,
Would take this heart.  Not vastly overrated,
Outdoing ev'ry love throughout the land,
But simple, almost common.  Everyday.
A love that checks on children in their sleep,
To reassure itself that they're okay,
That's all.  The rest of love would surely keep,
Until a little bit tomorrow, then
The next day, just as much.  There's plenty more,
But never hurried, even timid, when
Some special day wants bigger love in store.
For now asleep, but dreaming of a start,
Such love would reawake this sleeping heart.

Aprreciated and rated. I hear you, DB.
The Grandest love of all is the commonplace one.
Ballyhoo drains the pleasant swamp!
(R)ated because I like it!
I think that this is my favorite one so far, D Bard! It is quietly perfect...thank you!
Loving this db, the way it's written and the feeling inside.
One of your best, which is saying something, thank you.
Lovely. Filled with peace and gentle strength.
A pleasure to read.
Beautiful, DB.
Wishing you"Some special day"
Hello all. There have been many days lately when I failed to respond to comments. Thank you as always for your patience. Things have been inconveniently busy since returning from vacation, but that is, as they say, a good problem to have. It does mean however that I don't get to dote on anyone, just for coming by. So now....

FusunA, thank you. I'm pleased that it struck a chord. (This makes coffee in Montreal even more imperative.)

Fred yes indeed, it is the Grandest. Slow and steady wins the race, yes?

Susan, those are really important adjectives -- quietly perfect. I'll just whisper my thanks, sincerely.

Kim, thank you my friend. And high compliments, after your alpha and omega gemstone the other day.

anna1, I hope so. Peace is such a relative thing. It's nice to hear that some is showing.

Mark, you are most welcome here. Thanks for coming by. And I enjoyed your post about the Archies the other day. I'll be back as well.

Please keep coming by, and thank you for doing so even though I seemed to be hibernating. Your reading is very important to me. It's sort of, if a poem was written on a blog and nobody read it, would it even rhyme?

And now I'm very excited -- I have already written today's post, which means I might get to bed at a decent hour tonight.

Thank you all for reading, again.
Oh my - scupper and trilogy stopped in while I was responding.

scupper, in the spirit of the poem, I am very, very happy with your unadorned comment. I've gotten to know you a little, through them, over the last few months. They are pleasures themselves. And there I go, saying too much.

trilogy, that is a lovely sentiment to pick up on. And a very thoughtful thing to say.

I hope anyone in eastern North America gets through the day's heat, still fond of those they're fond of. The temperature can bring out tempers a little.
This is just lovely: the gentle progression from a quiet, everyday love checking on sleeping children to the sleeping giant.
