...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Nursery Rhyme. Friday July 30, 2010

Rate: 6 Flag

I want to tell you, even though I'm here,
How sorry that I was to disappear.
And even though I'm not too far away,
How much your absence colors ev'ry day.
Each day that you're not here is slightly longer
And though, with time, I get a little stronger,
Whenever you come by, and then we part,
This tiny hole gets bigger in my heart.

Wonder what the adult rhyme equivalent would be? Perhaps:

I love you dad.
It's not that bad.
I understand--
No wedding band.
My daddy's love
Is like a glove-
A ring won't fit
Outside of it.
Thinking of you, and of them, and of you again. Such a nursery rhyme.
I've written about my Dad, who came home everyday to be with me even after leaving Mom. Daddies and daughters have a special bond, and he seemed to understand that as John Mayer wrote, "daughters will love like YOU do." Whether your loved ones are daughters or sons or both, you're one o' those Dads, too--I can tell!
So heartfelt - as usual DB. You have such a way with words!
