Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Rain. Sunday Aug 22, 2010

Rate: 13 Flag

The rain.  An August torrent, hurricane-
Engendered from a thousand miles away,
Kept ev'ryone inside and half insane,
And cancelled any projects for the day.
The kids and I got out once, walked to town,
To buy a cup of coffee and a treat,
But mostly we stayed in and bedded down,
To watch a movie, play a game, and eat,
And listen to the downpour just outside,
While counting down the days unoccupied
By school -- the summer's end is nearly here.
So too, our second separated year.
Somehow the rain creates a warming space,
Where little bits of love are commonplace.

I really really love this one! Especially
"Somehow the rain creates a warming space,
Where little bits of love are commonplace."
What a perfect description of that feeling!
Sounds like this was a lovely day full of quality time with your kids, DB. I absolutely loved the last two lines and the fact that the tone is again lighter and hopeful. Best wishes to you.
I hope you have a lot of places where love is commonplace. R-
It's raining and really windy here today.
I like this weather..and your poem.
Rated with hugs
Torrents of so many kinds deplete us in so many ways. Love the close here where rain allows "... a warming space...." These are the spaces that allow love to find itself and spread its ... its everything. "... little bits of love are commonplace." Perhaps this is the greatest gift of all.

"So too, our second separated year."

Are you separated or divorced?

Big difference between the two--and perhaps why you're in so much agony over one and/or waiting for the other.
This is a beautiful day to have encapsulated.
I hope that's the right word.
What I'm thinking is, one day far-off, the kids
will be going through dad's things
and reading this look up at each other :
"... I remember that day !"
You made it special here.
You're making memories, out of ordinary days.
lovely. it almost never rains here. i thought i didnt miss it. now i'm not so sure.
I love this poem, especially the last two lines. Outstanding.
I love stepping out in the rain on these kind of days... because then a blanket and a hot cup of tea seem like heaven...
As everyone else said, DB those last two lines were so precious. But since everyone else said it, I'll go with Kim where he says "You're making memories, out of ordinary days."
Thats why I love your poetry so.
Engendered from a thousand miles away~
The storms that start far apart from us come and find us somehow. Your presence in your verses here is so calm and strong and benevolent.
Hello everyone.

Just quick comments tonight, I have to stop doing this at 2:00am, but that's when it seems to happen.

Pavanne, thank you. It is nice, being inside when it's raining like crazy, isn't it.

Kate, the best part was all three of us cuddled up in front of the movie. The rain broke the last of the heat, and made it possible.

Dave, thanks. I don't get out of town much. But we have our favorite spots, where life is really easy.

Linda, I think it was all the same front. What an impressive amount of rain.

anna1, it was my great good luck to have them on a day like yesterday.

markinjapan, welcome! Now you have my curiosity up, and I'll be watching the Okinawa weather for a while.

elsma, hello. Thanks for continuing to come by. Agony? Not really. That part seems to have cleared.

Kim, thanks for that. And thanks for your very kind post next door.

Lorianne, that's an interesting point. The rain can be a real inconvenience, but I don't know how I'd feel about losing it.

RomanticPoetess, thanks so much.

NOVAcatmando, yes. Tea and a blanket. Good call.

tril, I do love rendering an ordinary day into verse. Thanks.

catch-22, those are three very nice adjectives. I hope that the kids get that from me.

The rain was so heavy last night that when I'd taken the kids back to their mom and parked the car, I couldn't cross the street without walking through a river. So to protect my shoes, I took them off, and walked down the street in my socks. Easier to dry, and no risk of mildew.
Sometimes such a relief to see rain, know that there will be no rush to go out, find things that have to be done. Your second separated year, a pang in my heart. best to you DB and thank you for your words...
