Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Reason. Monday Sep 27, 2010

Rate: 9 Flag

A friend stopped by a couple weeks ago.
He had a cryptic list of reasons he,
Or anyone, might stay on earth, or so
He'd titled it.  The things he let us see,
These items in his list -- in all, sixteen,
In no apparent order -- gave a lens
For glimpsing certain places he had been.
But also raised unease among his friends:
Why make a list, unless there is a doubt?
Now, really -- what the heck is this about?

One item, number twelve, was simply "toast."
Of all the list, it spoke to me the most.
And so I made some, sitting down tonight.
And read the list again.  And he was right.

Thanks to Kim Gamble for his September 4 post, Sixteen reasons to live.

with butter and strawberry preserves. I haven't had toast in years. This reminded me of childhood. My mom made toast with tea every night before bed.
I love you man, I maybe love your writing more it's hard to tell.
Just go ahead and feel free to rip me off anytime mister :-)
what ? you have some kind of thing about emoticons ?
choosy choosy ...
Ah, yes! I remember Kim's post too. I recall "toast" spoke to me the most as well! Such a simple pleasure in life is tea and toast ... yum! :-)
Important post this, for so many reasons.
Elegant and delightful. This one has such a chatty tone that it reads easily. I'm sure it took hard work.
I agree with AHP; this feels serious and thoughtful but also light-hearted. It's very easy to enjoy.
Really, thanks to Kim.

heidibeth, so just the memory of toast makes life worth living?

Kim, the pleasure of this place is that really, I am nothing BUT my writing. (And mine does not make use of emoticons no sir.)

Kate, see there? I think he wrote the whole thing, just so he could put toast in it.

anna1, don't forget to enjoy it though. The toast.

Pilgrim, you got THAT right. But I am very, very glad to hear that it works.

catch-22, and that is a very easy compliment to enjoy too. Thank you.

I'm a little earlier tonight than lately; I want to thank everyone again for putting up with my drive-by response last night. Thank you, as always.
Late again, as usual, DB. I'll have to go read Kim's. Toast to me speaks of the simplicity of life. Very nice
I loved his piece and it hit some raw places. This poem makes it lighthearted, thank you for that. Toast is ruined for me now with all the whole grains it must contain for me now.
