Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

Errant. Wednesday Nov 10, 2010

Rate: 15 Flag

Dear chatelaine, I have your recent letter,
Which spoke to me across unfathomed seas.
The loneliness en route has gotten better,
And days no longer bring me to my knees:
This changing season makes the armor cool.
No longer does it burn the man inside.
And frost is not yet common, as a rule,
Though cold is troublesome, at eventide.
And night comes sooner now.  The blackened skies
Can find no warmth in stars.  The crescent moon
Comes beggaring the widest open eyes;
Indeed, I would be blind and frozen soon,
Except sometimes that I would stop to think
Of hearth, and you, and something warm to drink.

Tonight as I turned onto the road into town from the grocery store, I saw the crescent moon and not a star in sight. I love this poem. I am glad things seem to be better!
For a mo I thought this might be about Antoinette.
Tell me it's a different rhythm.
Anyway very nourishing, thank you.
All it takes for cooling embers to rekindle is to get closer to the source...even in thought.
A really reallly nice piece..and much food for thought.
I'm thinking this is a positive!
well, needless to say, i think anything with errant in the title is fabulous.... i sense a core of contentment bubbling up in your poems recently that is quite satisfying... thank you db
I'll make this my favorite, of anything I have read from you of late

(there's chatelaine, and errant, and beggaring, and words can bring anyone to their knees)
somehow these lines could have been composed next to a fire that would remind some of others, less visible ones

errant knights who go on quests usually find what they are looking for
Lovely. Excellent channeling of the errant knight, whose thoughts are homeward bound. As shiny as the moon, and much warmer than the knight's chilly sky.
Oh, Bard. Just oh. Your words here take my breath away.
I can always count on finding gems here - "This changing season makes the armor cool" is brilliant. Great piece...
Thank you, excellent people, for following me on my quixotic mission. You are all such wonderful company. And in this specific case, I believe it's true: I don't think I could do this without you.

pastvoices, as skies go, it was really a black one. And the moon, for all its barely thereness, did beat out the stars. It was really lovely.

Kim - uh sorry - who's Antoinette? I mean, I guess it's different, but - hey did you and rita... oh, never mind.

JD Smith - I never see you around here! Welcome! I am so glad you enjoyed, and do have some hot chocolate and think of a loved one, OK?

tril - thank you. Yes, I believe so - and you deserve it, you've been with me through thick and thin. Thanks for that especially.

Antoinet... oh. I get it. Finally. I've been trying to figure out what the heck both you and Kim were talking about. Sorry, it takes a little while for the obvious to get through the obtuseness. But yes, I think "core of contentment" states it nicely. Thanks!

vanessa - tell me it's the armor. I do wish for a fire. I can also wish for less visible ones. Thanks for your kindness.

Pilgrim - thank you, and it's good to see you again. The nights really are chilly lately (and dark. and early), aren't they. Brr.

Veronica - yes, the only trouble with hearth is that it's so rhyme-stingy. I guess that helps make it special. And thanks.

anna1 - well, thanks! I would have been happy, just to have given you pause. Your breath away? That is special.

Fox - you're a welcome addition to our little corner of the galaxy, I think. And I'm always gratified to see you come by.

That's all for tonight. I hope everyone gets all the sleep they need! Now go to bed!
Despite "unfathomed", I'm in love with "the crescent moon Comes beggaring the widest open eyes".
Fourteen lines of sheer and beautiful magic, DB.

This coupled with 'Fantasia' (Sunday, 14 Nov) .... absolute magic!
I like the word "errant." I love the way you put words together~r
