...Iambic pentameter is for the ear. Read it out loud.

Bio
While the ashes of marriage #2 were cooling, I began a journal here in verse, to keep myself out of trouble. So far so good, and one day at a time. I took a hiatus this past January, and I missed it terribly. Writing daily had changed the way I think - not my opinions, but the process of thinking itself. So here I am back again, and hungry. I began with three rules: (1) Iambic pentameter, (2) Perfect rhyme, and (3) It had to be true (no hyperbole). I hereby amend rule number 3: If I'm writing about myself, yes, it has to be true. But it doesn't, if I want to tell a story.

The kids presented me today with this:
A Nobel Prize for Poetry! Their fave
Describes an opportunity they miss
Each night they're here. These fearsome critics rave,
Repeatedly dissecting what I say,
And what I don't. This says I won first prize.
Me. Literary master, in their eyes.

(The poem that is linked is their hands-down favorite, of everything I've read to them. - DB)

I see wise children in your house! This is delightful as is the item linked!
Good stuff...both...Your kids are as discerning as you! rated
Thank you for the link. Your children have excellent taste. And I'm not just saying that to be nice! I love how creatively they're telling you how much they love you.
Good to see that your kids have an appreciation of good poetry...and ice cream.
So happy the kids saw the wonder in your poem.
rated with love
I really like that one, too.
I love your two. What little gems. They love what you do and they love the part they play. If this isn't magic, then what is. Pure magic for the three of you.
Clearly, your children have excellent taste.
See, who cares about Sweden?
Is it Sweden, I forget.
Such wonderful kids.
Proud they are of you .... and you of them.

Smiling here.
Hi everyone. I was trying to figure out how to post a picture of the certificate that the kids made, but it has my name on it, and their names, and that was just a little too much outright exposure for me. Sorry, I'm a chicken.

pastvoices, I'm glad you enjoyed them both. I've gained a couple of readers since it was originally posted (like you!), so I thought I could take the risk of linking to it.

Muse, that is a nice compliment, thank you. It is true, that they do discern as MUCH as I do, but our tastes really have diverged. So it's extra flattering that they like something I write.

heidibeth, thank you. And it's true, they do, and they are. I had just woken up from a nap, when they gave me the certificate. It was almost overwhelming.

trilogy, actually my son is the sugar lover. My daughter not so much. But she always makes an earnest effort (and I get to finish it frequently). As for the poetry, I think they really get it. I've been reading a lot of my stuff to them this year.

RomanticPoetess, thanks. Me too. They get really jazzed up by the poem taking them right to the BRINK of a bad word and then... poof. Averted.

anna1, they really are magic, even when they're just eating breakfast, or doing their homework.

catch, thanks. I like to think so!

vanessa... oh dear. You've sent me to Google again. And you're correct. (I thought Norway, but that's only the Peace prize.)

scupper, thanks for letting me know. I always like to see you here.

Kate, very, very proud.

Thanks everyone. Goodnight!
oops! I missed c&v!

Thanks! (I went back and read your comment.)
