Obama A No-Show In Berlin

Rate: 3 Flag

It wasn't a big deal so I suppose there really isn't any reason to be upset about it.

I mean it's only the 20th Anniversay of the most earth shaking event in world history in the last two decades but it's not a big deal.

Interestingly enough the news coverage from the United States was somewhat reserved at best so most American's won't even know what happened November 9th, 1989.

In fact, I'll bet that you could walk onto any college or university campus and ask them what the signifigance of that date is and they will most likely stare at you with some beer or marijuana-induced haze and have no idea what your talking about.

So I guess it stands to reason that a former law professor would not care enough about the events that transpired to even go.

ALL of the top diplomats from the major freedom-loving countries were there...except the President of the United States.

Oh, he gave his remarks though. He made sure that his favorite people in the world, Berliners, would hear his voice.

He NEEDS to have them hear his voice.

Instead, our so-called Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, did her duty and brought a VIDEO of Obama giving a speech to commemorate the event.

Once again Obama is sending DVD's to the leaders of Europe. What is it with this guy and the DVD's?

Now, it's not lost on the Germans that Obama CLEARED his schedule to go to Copenhagen to petition the IOC for the Chicago Olympics AND that he plans to move mountains to get to Norway to accept his Nobel Peace Award later this year.

So basically, the premise that the German people are left with is that the reason Obama did NOT show up for the anniversary commemoration is because it's NOT ABOUT HIM.

When it came to commemorating the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union and the Cold War, Obama was...busy.

Maybe he did not want to go because he knew that everyone would be thinking about ANOTHER American President who actually DID do something to destroy this wall.

Ronald Reagan shocked the word with his "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" speech.

However it was just the kind of courage that was needed at that time to make something happen and to declare to the world that the United States sttod with freedom loving people everywhere.

Obama does NOT like to be second stage and he knows he would have been here. Again, it's not about him so he sees no need.

I mean the Obama Adminstration played this SO badly that they din't even think to send the Vice President in his stead.

It is truly amateur hour at The White House.

This President seems intent on pissing off not only his major political base at every turn but ALSO pissing off our allies as well.

It won't be long before this man turns around at some point and realizes that he is alone on an island...isolated.

Mr President, I have a piece of advice for you Sir: That which you sow you shall someday reap.

This is a national embarassment.

Thousands died trying to escape the tyrrany of East Berlin and our President doesn't even have the common decency to honor that sacrifice.

Come to think of it, Obama isn't big on people fighting for their freedoms from oppressive governments.

Just ask the Hondurans and the Iranians.

Shame on you Mr President. Shame on you.

Two things. Can you tell us what happened 11/9/38? How about 11/9/23? 11/9/18? Just testing your knowledge of German history. Do you know who was born today? Famous German figure.

I thought the president was in Fort Hood today. I'm guessing if he had gone to Berlin instead, you would have had something else to post about.
Djohn,
You make some good points, but like fingerlakeswanderer said, had Obama visited Berlin I'm sure that many on the right, not necessarily you, would have accused him of a photo op. Remember when he greeted the caskets in Dover? The right ripped him for that. I think that whatever he does will be criticized by the right. Limbaugh blamed the Ft. Hood deaths on the fact that since Obama hasn't ended the war yet, the shooter snapped.

But, you do make some good points.
As long as the President is in the White House, taking care of US/U.S., I have no complaints. Our previous president was big on ceremony, I sure don't miss him!!!
DJohn, it is amateur hour across the board in the political arena. I swear, listening to the right beating down the left and the left beating down the right is worse than refereeing a class of third graders. Why is there so much hate and animosity toward one another? Why is it so hard for us to act like mature adults? Why?
Jesus H. Christ. In the grand scheme of things, do you people sit around all day just searching for a bogus critique? Tomorrow is Veteran's Day by the way. Thank you.
I remember what happened on 11/9/89...my wife and I were so happy about the wall coming down in Berlin that we went out and had ice cream!
~Come on people, now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another, right now...right now~
Weren't the cons bitching just last week that President Obama went to New York? And didn't the cons throw a bitch fit when President Obama went to Germany last year? Plus, because they didn't report it on faux "news", President Obama did do a broadcast speech.

But we all know what you would be saying if President Obama had gone to Germany, "what is he doing there instead of working on the problems here?"

And by the way, how many anniversaries of the wall coming down did the drunken Texas frat boy attend?
You make excellent points, although I agree with the comments here that Obama would have gotten beat up no matter what he had done on Monday. Still, I think his presence would have been worth the political price at home. Having attended the Berlin event myself, I would have loved to see him rub shoulders with the other world leaders at the Brandenburg Gate, i.e. demonstrate to the world that he really IS one of them and not the Emperor of the World, which is how he came across on his video (with its shameless buildup by Hillary Clinton).

Rated.
fingerlakes-First of all you are asking about dates that took place 71 and 86 years ago respectively. Since I am but 40 something these were events that took place in a prior generation. MOST people would not know these dates unless they were either A. serious students of history or B. had lived through these times themselves. But if you must know: 11/9/38 was when the Nazi's had their Kristallnacht or Night of the Shattering Glass and Adolf Hitler officially began his War Against the Jews.
In 11/9/23 the Nazi coup is put down as German Government troops put crushed the Beer Hall Putsch in Bavaria.
I will tell you in all fairness that I DID look these dates up. I knew they were affiliated in some way, shape and form with the Nazi's but I was not 100% sure. There. Happy now?
Roger, Kelly, Ocular-The simple fact of the matter is this was a milestone event and the Europeans saw it as just that. By not showing up in person Obama leaves them with the impression that what happened was more important to Europe than to the United States. In my opinion this was huge political blunder.
I don't entirely disagree djohn, but you will always find fault with Obama. I can't prove it, obviously, but I believe that if Obama had gone you would have harshly criticized him for either being too political, or ignoring issues at home.
Roger-You might be right. I think the reason that he gets to me is the cavalier attitude that he takes towards his job. Obama says one thing and does another quite often. It's hard to really get a feel for the man because you never really know what he thinks on a particular subject. In my opinion he is far more wrapped up in himslef than he should be. The WORLD is tiring of his pompous "Emperor of Earth" persona and I think it spells real trouble for him down the road. I don't think he does anything with the thought of the American People in mind. I think he weighs how it will impact him and his aspirations first and foremost before he does anything. He walks around with a WIIFM attitude: What's In It For Me?
DJohn, I agree with you on nearly all your points. Still, let me point out that the "Emperor of the World" role goes back to Woodrow Wilson, and subsequent presidents have found this role either too difficult or too attractive to abandon - just recall George H. W. Bush and his still-born "New World Order," which was merely half-assed, warmed-over Wilsonian. It's expecting an awful lot if you really think Obama will stop playing it. Still, I genuinely wish Obama would finally do so and transform the US into a "normal" country, but I suspect that neither Americans nor other peoples are ready for him. I half expected him and Clinton to be booed in Berlin along with Sarkozy and Brown, but they weren't at all - for some reason, people still expect the US president to play this role.

I've figured out that one reason why West Germans adapted so well to "democracy" after Hitler's death is that millions of them effortlessly swallowed the concept of the US president as a new "Führer," just as East German communists (but not most ordinary people) accepted Stalin in the same role. C.f. the rousing welcome Kennedy received in 1963 ("Ich bin ein Berliner"). The hatred shown towards Reagan (specifically for threatening nuclear war in Europe) and Bush (for his aggressive and cockeyed foreign policy) were anomalies. The "anti-Americanism" people in the US blather on about is only skin-deep. So as you can see, there's A LOT more to this issue than meets the eye. Perhaps we should both write blog posts about it. What do you think?
Alan-I think you should definately write about it. I would like to read your perspective on this and then perhaps write a companion piece?
Djohn, that's exactly what bothered me about Bush. His cockiness and swagger and his attititude made me root against him always.
Roger-That is actually something that I DON'T mind in my President. I think the job demands a bit of "swagger" and "cockiness." However, I don't get that vibe from the Obama Administration. With them, as with the Clinton Administration, there is a sense of entitlement or elitism that they portray. They have the attitude that they DESERVE to be in power rather than to see it as an incredible responsibility and blessing. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned in my beliefs about the Presidency and the institutions of our country.
