As I write this there is a coalition of military forces that are striking military targets inside Libya. Fighter jets are bombing air defense locations and have now begun to bomb military targets such as tanks and troops on the ground as well. It appears that we are at war with Libya. My question is why?
Operation "Odyssey Dawn" kicked off yesterday which just so happened to be the 8 year anniversary of when former President George W. Bush kicked off the war in Iraq. Interesting.
The Obama Adminstration says that it took this step as a last resort and that it has no plans to send in ground troops. However, anyone who knows anything about warfare knows that air power alone will not defeat a dug-in enemy. Sooner or later you have to get your hands dirty.
I have no problem with America, as the symbol of freedom and democracy in the world, lending a hand to the people of Libya to assist them in their fight to bring down Qaddafi. It was clear that what happened in Egypt was not going to happen in Libya.
What I DO have a problem with is WHY LIBYA? Why have we chosen to enter into an ILLEGAL war against a sovereign country? Is this not the same as when we went into Iraq? If THAT war was illegal then this war is also illegal. At least "W" had Congressional authorization to do so. What does Obama have? He consulted with the UN and with some of our allies and then BOOM! Let's start bombing.
My questions is this: What about the rest of the region? What is our policy and our plan for the rest of the powder keg over there? What happens if hostilities erupt in Saudi Arabia? What about what is going on in Bahrain right now? What is our policy? Are we just picking and choosing who we will and who we won't help? Why Libya?
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not a fan of Momo and his regime I am just a bit curious as to why we are going in. The fact is this IS a civil war and something that should be handled by the Libyans. If the people of Libya cannot depose their dictator like the people of Egypt did then shouldn't that be their problem?
Where are the voices from the left wing that spoke out so vehemently against the "illegal" war in Iraq but remain silent on this action? To be clear, whether you like it or not Bush sought AND received the authorization to go to war. Obama has not.
What happens if this spreads into other parts of the region. There is a very real possibility that America will get caught in a cross-fire if Arab nations decide to turn their guns upon us. Will the Arabs give Obama a pass because he is/was a Muslim at one point?
As you can see there are more questions than answers. There is no clear strategy here. I even heard the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mullen say that "Qaddafi could remain in power after it's all said and done." REALLY? Then why are we there? What are we doing?
I have a great idea. How about our illustrious President cuts his Latin American sight-seeing tour short and comes back home to our shores to better inform us of why we are now embroiled in a THIRD WAR.
Enough of this governing in absentia. It's time for him to step up to the plate and BE A LEADER.
Qaddafi has stated that he plans to fight and we should expect a "long war" in the process. Is America ready to get involved in another war? I look forward to hearing all of the excuses the left will come up with as to why THIS is justified but Iraq was not. After watching some of the coverage in the media it appears that this is already happening.
When I checked the two most left leaning sources for their imput I found the very same thing. The headline at the Daily Kos is: "It's time To Leave Nuclear Power Behind" and even though The Huffpo actually DID address the Libyan action it was in terms that were quite deferential to Obama. So far everyone is along for the ride I guess.
To be clear, Bush had the authorization to start his wars Obama does not. Unless of course we now take our marching orders from the U.N.

We have gas in the tank for what you talk about as other possibilities DJohn, if demanding, and yes, ground troops will come into play or there will be a settlement.
Meanwhile they blew Qaddafi's compound to hell. It seems like they had Qaddafi’s death in mind with that attack.
Impeach Obama Now!!!
As a lefty, I fully support President Obama's military actions. It's consistent with actions taken by just about every president since Teddy Roosevelt. Remember Reagan in Granda or Bill Clinton in Somalia? Same difference with regards to Congress.
Unlike Iraq II, this limited military action is about defending freedom, liberty, and human rights. The costs are low, and the benefits are very high. The one thing you can say about this action is that it's somewhat hypocritical, as we're doing just the opposite in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and Bahrain. There big money and American military interests are in play (on the wrong side as usual).
But doing even one right thing (with Libya) should be applauded.
Obama needs to come before the American People and spell this out now. Are we at war? If not what is our goal? We can't just keep dropping bombs and hope for the best. An air war will not knock Momo off the throne.
