 Flight to the sun

I'm going holo holo* the next few days. Mosying on out of Austin this afternoon, heading for Seattle this evening to break bread with a friend. Then in the morning the big bird will fly to Kona, where I'll arrive at noon. Meeting new old friends in Hilo in the evening for dinner. Then Friday morning I pick up my new old truck and head for my place up the slope.

Within a few days I hope to have my new old shipping container picked out and delivered to my lot, from whence I will begin converting it into my SOHIAC (Slice of Heaven in a Can) prototype.  I plan to blog about the project as I go, but it may take me a little while to get geared up. Be back when I can.

In the meantime think nice thoughts, eat your vegetables, and no hitting!

Aloha means Love. It is used in Hawai'i to say hello and goodbye. And in the spirit of Aloha I say goodbye to my Austin friends, and hello to my Big Island friends.

Aloha,

David

Ha Ha Ha! That is waaaay cool! The wife and I had a 20' overseas container for temporary storage while work was being done on our house. I always thought it would be a great place to hide away. Like a kid with a fort in the woods. Hope you post pics! Have a safe trip.
I cannot wait either..
rated with hugs and will miss you

Great Texas wasn't for you anyhoo.
Have a wonderful trip, Dave. Beautiful photo! Aloha.
Conrad, you hit it right on the head... a kid with a fort in the woods!
Are those containers not made of steel?

Are you really gonna try to live in an oven in a hot climate? If so....Good Luck with that!!

PS
In the Caribbean, many people use zinc corrugated metal sheeting on their roof. They keep it tolerable by covering it with about 6 inches of palm leaves to block the sun.

^R^
Do you really need a house if you live in Hawaii. Me, I'd just live on the beach. Can you tell I'm jealous?
I do so look forward to this, David. This is going to be fun to follow.
Can't wait to hear about those islands! Wishing you safe travel!
Aloha, David. When you start feeling the onset of island fever, head back to the mainland for a spell. What's great about these times is we don't really have to say goodbye. Stay online.

Take care, David! Mahalo for the update...
Well have a great time as you holo holo.
Pixie - Yes, managing the solar heat load is a key part of making this workable. I'll be writing about this as I go. For this project I am adding insulation and drywall inside, using a high-tech ceramic particle paint with an R3 value outside, adding a slanted roof for rainwater catchment and solar power generation, and adding solar barriers and vegetation to keep direct sunlight off the sunward side.

No palm leaves. They attract palm rats. :)
Make sure you have your water too...i read the posts on that what storage container did you decide on?
