- Bio
- Call me Ishmael. Son of an Irish immigrant. A wandering youth mostly spent in poverty. An octogenarian now who is attempting to becme a folk-poet in his retirement. Hoping to emulate Grandma Moses, who became a recognized folk-artist in her seventies.
The "student" in my blog name? It is part of my URL. I initiated the URL at the same time that I was attending night classes at UNLV. The story is that, after three years in the Navy Air Corps (1944-1947), I enrolled in the University of Wyoming. I dropped out three times and left without a degree. I made up the nine credits that I needed by attending UNLV for three semesters. In 2003, at the age of 77, I received a BA in English from Wyoming.

Politicians and Poets
I have to share my find: The startingly prescience of an American poet laurate. I found the following stanza in Donald Hall's book of poetry: White Apples and the Taste of Stone" (Page 170). The poem was written in 1988 -- 24 years ago! Does anybody but me see a prophecy… Read full post »
AMERICAN AGENDA - 2012
I don't think that the rapture occured. If it did, there were very few righteous that were raised to heaven. So, let's get on with next year's election. I have summarized the recommended GOP platform for the "Joe Plummers" of the world, and the GOP candidates.

TOUGH LOVE
He eternally cursed
Adam and Eve and their children
for their disobedience.
He drowned all his children
except for Noah and his family
because of their idolatry.

BIG BROTHER
No, not the big brother of the novel 1984. The big brother of a little bully.
As I was growing up, more than once I was challenged by a little snot-nosed kid that I could easily lick. I refused the challenge because the kid's big brother w… Read full post »
SHAME !
Are those rumors about building holding camps for illegal immigrant detention true? President Obama has tried tougher enforcement of immigration laws -- in effort to garner support for the Dream Act. His effort proved fruitless on Saturday. By a vote o… Read full post »
BOXING CLICHES
He's an old heavyweight.
Misshaped fingers.
Cauliflower ears.
Jagged eyebrows.
Crooked nose.
The back is still muscled.
The waist is still trim.
The arms are still large.
The legs are still strong.
Sixty-eight fights
with forty-two wins.

I CAN NEVER BE A POET
I write of commonplace themes.
I write of ordinary people.
I write of practical daydreams.
I write of remembrances.
I don't cite famous poets.
I don't cite exotic flora.
I don't cite bohemian tastes.
I don't cite arcane creeds.
I am pedantic.
I am verbose.
I am self-righteous.

Tell me, citizen,
how many have died in Operation Iraqui Freedom?
Tell me, patriot,
how many have been wounded?
Tell me, Christian,

I've Done Some Good
I've done some good
along the way.
I can't recall an incident.
There must have been some.
I'm kind.
I'm generous.
I'm empathetic.
I love babies and toddlers.
When I say "some good"

My Marvelous Lunch
Once a month, in the sixth grade,
we had a box lunch party.
The girls brought a box lunch for two.
The boys brought a quarter.
Each quarter went to charity.
Nance, Dorothy and Bonnie.
Those were the pretty girls.
That's where the competition was.
I always chose Georgia.

RECESSION SOLUTIONS
I am so sick and tired of all those liberal, progressive, socialistic complaints from the Far Left. Yes, times are tough. Unemployment is excessive. Foreclosures are rampant. My response is grab your bootstraps and lift yourself up. There are numerous ways to counteract… Read full post »
I've Struck It Rich !
This post is a fond farewell to my friends (favorites) in OS. For some reason that I can't explain I have received an offer that I can't refuse. I received a PM from Mr. Nicholas Dansuma, a branch manager of the Eco Bank of Ghana. In the message, Mr. Nicholas explained… Read full post »

Treat a Lady
Folk wisdom said
treat a lady like a whore,
treat a whore like a lady.
The young man said
this is contrary,
this is wrong.
So, he carried his pedestal.
Like Merlin's enchantment,
Early Mass
This poem was prompted by Bonnie Russell's "Good Catholics" post. (Just happened to have it in my memory snapshot bank.)
In the early morning,
on the way home from work,
I passed my friend John.

I Remember Boy - 1937
I used to meet him at recess

At first, it was just casual conversation.
I asked after his health. He wagged his tail and slobbered a bit

He returned each day at recess time.

What Happened to the Recess Bell?
What happened to the recess bell?
Why doesn't it ring anymore?
I am tired of exercises and examinations.
I want to escape the dreary routine,
I want to play at adventure.
I want to frolic free from expectations.
I want to run and yell.
NATIONAL PRAYER DAY. UH? WHAT?
