I’ve met a number of Liberals who will vote Democratic in the mid-term elections, but without any enthusiasm. The underlying sentiment seems to be, Obama disappointed us and deserves to be punished. That’s too bad. Republican victories will only make matters worse. Somehow, many Liberals were deluded into thinking that Obama was a Liberal himself. He certainly didn’t do much to dispel that idea.
It should be obvious to everybody by now that Obama is a centrist with a limited dose of Liberal sympathies. I don’t see anything wrong with that. While issue by issue polls indicate that the U.S.A. is demographically slightly left of center, its power structure, including our kind-of-representational Senate is slightly right of center. The only possible way for Obama to get anything done, and he’s done a lot, is to hew closely to the middle of the road.
Instead of moping about the feebleness of Obama’s social agenda, Liberals and Independents should consider how their long-term objectives will be affected by Republican majorities in Congress. Centrists, Liberals and Progressives can agree that cutting Social Security, rolling back health care and transferring even more wealth to those in the top one percent income bracket would be bad things.
So, quit writing letters to Obama about how he’s failed you and your ideals and start talking to your coworkers and neighbors about preventing an electoral disaster. Come on, do it.

I'm constantly amazed by how little credit Obama gets from anybody for what he's accomplished so far. And, we'll need to do more than hope to ensure he gets re-elected.

I'm not sure it's a sensitivity problem so much as a realization of self-delusion, which is embarrassing. The students and 20-somethings who went whole hog for Obama projected their own dreams on him. When reality intruded, anger resulted. A lot of those folks feel they were "had." Obama needs to speak to this problem directly or it will fester for years.
