Eat Pie for A Cause!

Who doesn't love pie? There is a pie shop in San Francisco, Mission Pie, which not only has the best pies you have ever eaten, but serves up education and job training with your slice of delight.  On a recent visit, some of the pies offered included mixed berry, plum frangipane, and one of my favorites, banana cream pie.  I have tried them all (and then some), and have not tasted one I did not want more of.  In addition to selling some great pies, Mission Pie also functions as a job training program.  While there are many job training programs designed to help youth who may not enjoy the classroom so much to succeed in becoming lifelong learners and self-sufficient, productive workers, most of these programs teach one type of skill.  In contrast, Mission Pie and its affiliated Pie Ranch offer several types of job training to at-risk youth in San Francisco, all rolled into one.  Through an internship at Mission Pie, participants learn about sustainable agriculture, which also teaches them where food comes from and the basics of nutrition.  Through working in the cafe they learn culinary skills as well as the nuts and bolts of running a business.  Local youth are eligible to do internships on both the farm, Pie Ranch, and in the cafe itself.  One of its co-founders was honored recently for her contributions to the community.  With all of that, how can you not have some pie?

I like this to have, heavenly spiced cakes and hearty stews hit the menus and seasonal pumpkin treats are everywhere. The typical sweet potato pie is a mainstay at most Southern Thanksgivings, but the folks at The Sweet Potato Project want you to eat it all year ’round by ordering Sweet Potato Pie from Addie’s Fine Foods. The recipe was created by Mississippi resident Addie Simon back in 1966 — it was the only dessert she could stomach while going through chemo and radiation treatments for cancer. Not only does she feel her pie is “a true blessing in providing her with a healthy dessert alternative rich in cancer-fighting nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C and Promotional Items beta-carotene,” when you order your own for just $15, you support the Children’s Heritage Foundation. While it doesn’t take much to convince me to eat a piece a pie, supporting a good cause while taking down a tasty dessert is like the whipped cream on top!
