Thanksgiving Without the Turkey

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  I have warm childhood memories of spending the day with family, friends, and also welcoming others to share the day.  Most years, the focus of the meal is the turkey.  My family's Thanksgiving table has always also included non-traditional side dishes right next to the mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and stuffing: another stuffing made of Chinese sausage and sticky rice, stir fried Chinese greens, and steamed rice.

This year we are spending the holiday in tropical Southeast Asia, to reunite with my parents.  A little different.  Instead of the turkey, the main course was ikan panggang , or stingray grilled in a banana leaf and served with a sambal of fresh chilies and shallots.  But it was still of day of family and of thanks.

My seven year old shared what she is thankful for:

"This Thanksgiving I am thankful that I have a lot of health from my parents... I am also thankful for houses I can live in and my food to eat.  I am glad that my parents work so hard... to buy food and clothes for me.  I am grateful that I have a sister to play with when I am lonely, and that I am not homeless.  Finally, I am thankful that scientists invented medicine for sick people and animals."

Happy Thanksgiving!
