Healthy Travel With Kids-- Packing First Aid and Beyond

Rate: 0 Flag

travel kit  It has been so cold here in San Francisco this week- in the 30s and 40s, which is unheard of in these parts. For the rest of the US, that's just winter.  Some of you snowbirds may be lucky enough to be escaping the cold winter for a tropical vacation.  Need some advice on what to pack?

In the days before kids, packing for a beach vacation was simple- swimsuit, shades, and sunblock were the basics.  Throw some kids into the mix, and things get more complicated, to say the least.  Being prepared as a parent means some careful planning to make sure you have everything ready for a trip with your kids.  As a mom, doctor and traveler, I always pack a "first aid kit plus."

What's in my bag?

1. bandaids in various sizes- for the inevitable scrapes and cuts
2.  antibacterial ointment or spray
3.  baby wipes- good for cleaning more than just babies' bottoms!
4.  benadryl- both kids' and adult- in case of allergic reactions
5.  tylenol or ibuprofen- both kids' and adult- for fevers or pain
6.  hand sanitizer
7.  imodium
8.  facial tissues
9.  cough drops
10. prescription medications
11.  health insurance cards
12.  lip balm
13. sunscreen- the solid forms now available will allow you to pack this in your carry on bag
14.  hydrocortisone cream- good for itchy rashes, bug bites

If you are traveling to a tropical destination or developing country, it is best to consult with your doctor or travel clinic at least 6 weeks before your trip to see if you will need any immunizations or prescriptions to keep you healthy at your destination.

Bon voyage!
