Peranakan Food in Singapore: Kaya Toast

Rate: 0 Flag

kaya toast in Singapore

Tea and toast, Singapore style.  This is a scrumptious meal served at breakfast or tea: English style black tea sweetened with condensed milk, served with toasted white bread slathered generously with slabs of butter and kaya, a jam made of coconut milk, eggs, and pandan extract.  This is an example of Peranakan food.  The Peranakans are descendants from the late 15th and 16th century Chinese immigrants and the local Malays in the British Straits Settlements, which is now Malaysia and Singapore.  This is a unique cuisine which combines elements of Chinese and Malay cuisines.
