A Wedding Day. ( for dianaani's open call )

Rate: 7 Flag

This is for dianaani's inspired open call.  I previously mused on this photo here.

Trinidad wedding by Linda Shiue

I see a woman being clutched by two men.

She is holding a bouquet and wearing a white dress and veil, so she must be getting married.

I see a funky, stylish wedding ensemble.

Glamour beside a rustic country home.

Who is the groom?

She and the man in the right in the picture look happy. Is he the groom?

The man on the left in the picture does not look happy.

He appears tense and uncomfortable,

and his body language points away from her.

His suit is ill-fitting.

It must have been uncomfortably hot in the tropical heat.

It must also have been uncomfortably formal for him, the owner of a village dry goods store.

That is my husband's grandfather, and he is the groom.

Was he unwilling, did he have cold feet?

Or was he just uncomfortable posing for the camera?

Were they in love?

It is not even known in the family lore how much of a common language they shared.

The photo holds mysteries.

The photo depicts the beginnings of my husband's mixed heritage

in the Caribbean.

We don't know what Grandfather was thinking.

Perhaps he was thinking of faraway Canton, from whence he sailed

and never returned.

I remember this photo from one of the first posts of yours I ever read. You know how much I love old photos, and this one is so exceptional.

You are so right about the dressed up people and the dilapidated house behind them, the groom's borrowed(?) suit and the lovely bride (love those shoes!). But your knowledge of their personal history is a help to understanding that wistful look on their faces.

Thanks for sharing your family photo and story with us. Beautiful!
Thanks, dianaani, for creating this fun open call. I enjoyed the chance to have another look and read into this photo.
What a great history from this one photo. thanks for sharing. I have really enjoyed this open call. RRRRR
He looks like he won a prize, and is trying to hold in his glee -- for the sake of dignity. The grandfather looks worried, and maybe doesn't like to have his picture taken. I hope there is a happy ending for them (and not just for the great-grandson and Linda).
Interesting to see wedding photos from different eras and cultures, Linda. More so to read into the expressions of the people and fantasize. I like your interpretations of this one. Thank you for sharing a part of your heritage. ~R
Bernadine- thank you! It is a fantastic open call.

Bellwether- what happier ending do we need than mine? :)

Fusun- thank you! Good to see you back.
Very perceptive interpretations of the type of mysteries we all have in our family backgrounds. Enjoyed this a lot.
Thanks, ladyslipper.
I love this picture and your interpretation. I'm interested in the bouquet - it seems enormous and full of greenery. Also, her shoes look like high-heeled spectators. The gloves, the hat, the suits - someone ironed those linen suits!
Lucy, thanks for reading this. I have looked at this photo many times, but it was not until dianaani's prompting that I noticed those details. The bouquet looks like an entire plant! And the shoes- I would love those.
