Holiday Wishes to OS: Rebel Jesus + Trans Siberian Orchestra

Rate: 17 Flag

Happy Holidays, OS friends!   Bionic Man Steve and I will be on the go to a gathering of my family, back home, then a vacation with James, Andrew & The Weasel, so if we don't comment for a while, it's not that we don't love you, we're just away from our computers!

Bells of Dublin

I thought you might enjoy this unique Christmas song sung by Jackson Browne and accompanied by The Chieftains.

Jackson Browne & The Chieftains- The Rebel Jesus

(from beemp3.com)

All the streets are filled with laughter and light
And the music of the season
And the merchants' windows are all bright
With the faces of the children
And the families hurrying to their homes
As the sky darkens and freezes
We'll be gathering around their hearths and tables
Giving thanks for God's graces
And the birth of the rebel Jesus

Well they call Him by the Prince of Peace
And they call Him by the Savior
And they pray to Him upon the seas
And in every bold endeavor
And they fill His churches with their pride and gold
As their faith in Him increases
But they've turned the nature that I worship in
From a temple to a robbers' den
In the words of the rebel Jesus

We guard our world with locks and guns
And we guard our fine possessions
And once a year when Christmas comes
We give to our relations
And perhaps we give a little to the poor
If the generosity should seize us
But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why they are poor
They get the same as the rebel Jesus

But please forgive me if I seem
To take the tone of judgement
For I've no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In this life of hardship and of earthly toil
We have need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure
And I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel Jesus.

Since I grew up Methodist and now identify myself as a Quaker, I don't think of myself as "a heathen and a pagan," but I do  believe that it's how you act not what you profess that matters.  Works, not faith.

My faith is God-centered, not Christ-centered, and I am open to all religions, prophets, and outlooks (agnosticism and atheism included).  I note that most Christians are very selective about heeding Jesus' teachings.  People have gone to war in Jesus' name for more than 2000 years (from the Crusades to today), forgetting that Jesus was a pacifist who worked tirelessly to promote peace and justice.  I hope we can work together (lobbying congress via e-mail and phone, and perhaps in person) to ban torture, restore habeas corpus, end invasive wiretapping and other infringement of civil liberties, create jobs, feed the hungry, provide quality education & affordable health care to all, make equality regardless of race/gender/age/sexual orientation/religion a reality, invest in alternative energy, ween ourselves from foreign oil, create viable public transportation, increase fuel efficiency, protect endangered species, and listen to & negotiate with our allies and enemies.  Perhaps we can become again a beacon of hope and goodness and opportunity for all.

This afternoon I attended a Trans Siberian Orchestra concert with James, Andrew, and Andrew's best friend Cole.  We had seen TSO once before and wanted Cole, who plays violin in the HS orchestra, to experience TSO's rock 'n' roll electric fiddle prowess.

Here's a professional video of Trans-Siberian Orchestra performing "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" that features a little girl, her kitten, a magic trunk, and the TSO.  Below it are some brief video clips James took with his digital camera, from the concert we attended on 12/20/2008.

In addition to giving a whole new meaning to traditional Christmas music, Trans Siberian Orchestra has a Rebel Jesus message:  you can make a difference by helping a neighbor.  We can change the world one person at a time.  Wishing on a star--and anything, even a neon bar sign, can be a star--can have magical results.  Nurture hope.  Dare to dream.  Believe.

Here are a few video clips that James took from the Trans Siberian Orchestra concert.  Wishing you a safe, joyous, and blessed holdiay season & a New Year full of adventure and love.

I love this song -- the rebel Jesus. It's sort of one of those very odd coincidences. I was just working on a post about religion and rebellion. Thanks for posting this.
I am right there with you Shelle. Thank Mary & Steve for this lovely post. If we don't do something to contribute to life, then all we are doing is taking. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family Mary!

rated for the rebel Jesus
WOOF WOOF WOOF. From this dog and Mrs.C wishing you, Mary, Steve, James, Andrew and Jaws-of-Steel Weez, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

P.S. And don't worry about Mark Texeira. Sox will rock in '09. WOOF.
I just put "Rebel Jesus" on my Christmas CD...
Thanks for giving the gift of music!
Have a wonderful trip and the happiest of holidays...
I loved the Rebel Jesus song. Going to play it again. Thanks.

Don't know if that's a Jackson Browne original, but it sure sounds like his writing -- one of the true poets of our age. Thanks for sharing, and Happy Holidays to you and yours from the Rebel Tom.
Hi Mary. I wouldn't give up on Jesus just yet, there's more there than meets the eye! Thanks for all your hard work and Merry Christmas.

Interesting song, with the Irish feel, but the lyrics can be sung to the tune of his Pretender just as well.
The bells of Dublin is my all time fav christmas album
Fabulous song, and I've heard a lot about the TSO. A very Blessed and Merry holiday time to you and yours, too.
Talk about guitars and strings! I'm jealous! I LOVE TSO! Your whole family rocks Mary!

I love this post and the whole message you put forth. The best way to make a change is one at a time. Many blessings for much peace, joy, happiness, success, good health and goodwill.

Happy Holidays and lots of wishes for a ROCKIN new year!
Thank you so much for this gift. May your holiday be joyous.
Oh, my Rebel Jesus! I love the man who dared to call his leaders hypocrites and liars! Thank you for this greeting.
I have the Chieftan's CD -- in fact, I was just playing it last night. "Rebel Jesus" always brings a tear to my eye. It's my favorite hymn, if you can call it that.

Warmest greetings to you and Steve and thanks again for the technical support!
Happy Holidays Mary et al! Be safe, have fun, eat lots and enjoy.
"But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why they are poor"

Thanks for this great Christmas present. Best wishes of the season right back at you and yours and of course the black wonder.
Love this song too. my son introduced me to an even better one "Long haired radical socialist Jew" about Jesus. Love them both!!!!!
Wonderful! Irvin and I went to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra just last week. First half of the show, um, not so great. Second half, ROCKIN'! And I am not too old to get a rush out of a good light show with real pyrotechnics--and flame throwers ;)

Happy holidays to your whole wonderful family, including all of the furry ones.
This album, with the possible exception of some of the oldies but goodies (Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis) is my all-time favorite. I love The Chieftains any time of year but "The Bells of Dublin" exudes spirit and joy rarely found.

I should have know you appreciated this as I do. Slainte and Marry Christmas!
Thank you for the beautiful post & music!
Merry Christmas to you and all your loved ones and may the New Year bring much joy & many blessings!

Margie
Yeah the world is pretty fucked from people who believe they can do anything because their beliefs are right. Everyone has an opinion, and talk is cheap.
That Chieftans cover reminds me of a Monty Python cover of a fake album called, "When the woman of your dreams runs away with a Scottman from Hull"
You present words that we need to hear. I am not that familiar with the Chieftans and the TSO, but I shall become more aquainted. That you for your post.
Thanks guys! Merry Merry to you both and see you in 2009.
I thoroughly enjoyed this - thanks so much.
Peace, cheers & namaste
Thanks for all the kind comments. "Rebel Jesus" was written by Jackson Browne for the 1991 Chieftains album The Bells of Dublin. Browne also chose to include it on his 1997 greatest hits CD.

I haven't given up on Jesus, my faith is just God-centered, not Christ-centered. I believe many prophets have profound teachings to share. I do object to those who feel that the only way to heaven is by means of a specific faith, whatever that faith may be. I believe that God is interested in what you have done with your time on earth, not what you believe or profess. If God won't allow people of all faiths and no faith into heaven, good people who lived decent, productive, and helpful lives, then I don't want to go there.

Happy New Year!
