in praise of adverbs: stupidly

Rate: 19 Flag

(or Obama Remark on Black Scholar’s Arrest Angers Cops)

cops were mad when one of their own

a good guy in blue who took the mad professor

down

for yelling when they wanted to

arrest him for breaking into his

own home

and the man who was president

who was also black

used the word “stupidly”

as in the cop acted stupidly

and the cops had a message for that black

adverb using president—in fact

they didn’t like his stupid implication

that a cop didn’t have the right

to stupidly arrest a black man

without being called stupid.

if they weren’t mistaken, the president

wasn’t supposed to be black anyway

but post-racial and was it some kind of trick?

everybody knows even in 2009 men of inkier tone

are suspect while milkier men own their own homes & only pink

complexions can say “stupidly” so long as they pronounce it

“stooopidly”..and hey, was that guy they arrested supposed to

be smarter than the cops or something

smarter than anybody

because he owned that damned home

and taught classes at that damned school?

“Stupid,” the cops said and they said it in like the foul men

do on tv leaning in with their sour breath close against the suspect’s

bleeding ear.

“who you callin’ stupid?” they said, collectively,

(stupidly)

and the american news crews circled in and

reported all this and reported and

reported and

reported

all of

this

so stupidly.

What's in a word? So much acrimony over 2 little letters "ly" and so much over-reaction because of 2 little letters "ty".
This was a tremendous post. Thank you
thanks walter. when i was taught writing they never to or rarely to use adverbs ("let the action speak for itself") but sometimes no other word will do but stupidly. =) maybe adverbs aren't so bad.
Wonderful. I like this immensely. the whole situation was just, well, stupid.
AMEN! Interesting how the timing of that charged question (near the end of an hour-long focus on a national crisis) required a presidential response that was destined to provoke controversy, no matter how framed.
The question and timing ensured that the focus would shift off-point, through the expected media blitz.
Can we now get back to healthcare reform, people? An issue that will affect every single one of us and our progeny for the foreseeable future? Timely, IMPORTANT POST, dolores.
--rrrraaaated--
I loved the newscasters coming on the morning after and saying, "Everybody's talking about the presidents comment." Really? I thought they're the ones giving us the news. Who is this "everybody" they're referring to...it's THEM. They're all talking about it and they're wanting us to all talk about it. I bet if I were one of those cops that night, I'd have probably gotten home after my shift, closed my door, and said to myself, "Holy shit...that was stupid."
micalpeace and mothership...thanks for commenting!

i wrote this last night and this morning its still all over the news with the news heads saying that obama should apologize and the police chiefs saying the same thing. what I want to know is why white police officers must be given the benefit of the doubt...while black professors in their own home are not?

but of course this does serve the corporate media's aim of taking our eye off the ball when it comes to health care reform. so i guess it's targeted stupidity...
noahvose, it does remind me of the lipstick on a pig story a few months ago. good grief.
Well said delores. Stupid is as stupid does.

RATEDLY
so much really obtusified insanity; willingly accomplishing nothing but showing how far we as a country still need to intelligently travel. rAted!
boomerbob: thank-you for commenting. stupid does happens too often I'm afraid.

Mr. Mustard: thanks for commenting. I'm all for intelligent travel. I wish police officers could travel in the shoes of those they racially profile. I'm sure it wouldn't be easy to face a lifetime of that sort of antagonism from law enforcement.

and was it just me or was there an oliver zhang just here offering me tall milfs? spammers in comments....I'm impressed that os filters made it go away. anyway, I prefer milfs to be short...
that is the key word. well done. even at harvard, they still learn slow.
ben sen, this story is going to be happening all day...i just walked into the breakroom where CNN is playing and the only message that ever comes out on a story like this is message control. obama should apologize for losing message control (?)

it's funny that this is just what the media liked about bush. message control. propeganda, messages that are not from the heart, are far more easily integrated and digestable.

But that's exactly why I still like obama though I don't agree with him on all the issues and probably never will. he has a heart and occasionally it slips out in the words he says. and thank god for that. but for this the media can't bear it. he must pay....ug.
oh, this is brilliant!!! i love this. thanks for being so entertaining on such a triggering subject. love love love
How I enjoyed this. To hear the actual story repeated again and again and the drama of it gets tiresome, but to put such a fine point on it like you have is a lot of fun. You are good at what you do. You are smart, not stoopid. Thanks.
theo: thanks for taking time to comment. I'm glad to entertain you. too bad as we don't get paid like the guys on fox & friend, right? we could have way more fun and be more informative in our commentary as well.

latethink: glad you found this fun too. we have to have fun or else we'd start crying. meanwhile how many people die each year because they can't afford to see a doctor? too bad poor people aren't as worthy of a news story as a gotcha moment for a politician. it's lipstick on a pig, it is!
Right, DF. I think I said it on another blog that the politicians have shown the American citizens--their employers-- that our lives are not worth what lobbyists are willing to pay them to let us all die of neglect or what they lobbyists will pay to put poison drugs on the market and all of that. I have had it! And I still believe in Obama, had my doubts about him during the campaign, but between McCain's totally embarrassing performance and Obama's cool, Obama came through. He will again, I think.
So true. It was the act that was stupid, so he behaved stupidly. But the distinction is often not noticed.

Personally, I love the mostly made up word 'shittily' heh heh An adverb to remember
thank-you, latethink, Roy, laurel, not lauren, waking up slowly, and odetteroulette....

but odetteroulette I can't believe that shittily is anything but an authentic adverb. Sometimes there is no better word to use. How else could you say it but: the Blue Dog Democrats are shittily opposed to passing the health care reform bill? Or Newt Gingrich shittily called Sotomayor a racist and later, shittily, tried to walk it back...?

this is exactly why i love vocabulary lessons!
Actually, Obama was doing a classic parenting technique -- by using 'stupid' as an adverb, he was criticizing the act, not the actor.

Without a doubt, the cop acted stupidly. Most of us suspect he was a stupid guy, but even smart people occasionally do stupid things.
you are an incredibly readable poet

I would follow you anywhere
but you won't lead
someone like me
for sure

oh, well
back to my stupid life
"Tempest in a teapot"--swept away by a communal beer?
This story has legs, so you know there is SOME subtext we're all stepping around.
Ya know Delores, sweet lady? This has nothing to do with your post, but for the longest goddamned time, I wondered what the hell your avatar was.

Keep in mind that I'm in health care, so until just a few moments ago, I thought it was one of those B&W prints of a mammogram.

I can see a breast in the picture, painfully flattened by the mammography equipment and x-rayed.

Now I see the globe (I think). God do I feel stupid sometimes. Or maybe just an old pervert.
I get your message. Stupid is as Stupid does.
