The recent Pew Research Foundation report on immigration, the most common headline of which was as to their lately being more Asian immigragtion than Hispanic, ion't surprise people who know immigration factually, instead of scream about it, if the notion of Asian used in the study points to ambiguities in the whole notion of race, just as Asian immigrants challenge notions of race, and racism, as a cause of all sorts ot things in America too.
Asians as such too often get left out of immigration debates, unwise in a state like California, as if the Vietnamese of course are reliable Republican voters, because of NLF flags carried by some people in the sixties, the other Asians vote down the middle as to partisanship, something that a turn either way could have significant electoral consequences.
As to ambiguities, if one called Native Americans Asians, which they are, 1/32 Creek in my case, then that result wouldn't look the same. As to a certain silliness, Chinese aim nuclear weapons at Indians and vice versa, and Koreans and Japanese have been known to have some issues with each other, as have Chinese and Japanese, as to there being such a thing as "Asian," like saying Germans and say Greeks are "European." They are, if the differences are hardly small either.
The British of course don't know if they are Europeans or not.
As to the dubious notion of "Asian"in the study, Indians aren't linguistically related to Chinese, Japansese, or Koreans, nor are they related ethnically, as non-"Dravidian" Indians are "whiter" than many "white people," and yet they count as "Asian." North Indians in particular are "Aryans" as to both ethnic descent and language, like Iranians, the latter as inhabitants of course for Iran as "land of the Aryan."
But that's o.k., as to how we seem to label anyway, if "Asians" don't fit the model of race we usually discuss, as to the Big Bad White Wolf, pro or con, open or latent.
The White Wolf is always bad, or superior for that matter, runs into a problem with the "Asians."
That's because Asians on average do better, and by a wide margin, than other ethnic groups in the United States,"Whites" included, save for Jews, who of course are basically European if Ashkenazi, which most American Jews are.
As to how "Asians" challenge notions of race and racism alone as a cause of say economic inequality, if it was the case that race was an insumrountable barrier and the source of all our social and economic problems, due of course to the Big Bad White Wolf, then it must be the case that "Asians" are discriminating against other people in America, since they earn more money by such a wide margin than any other ethnic group, save of course for the Jews. The more things change... .
Sine that's silly as townhy " Asians" are earning more money than all other groups, that must mean the Big Bad White Wolf isn't in fact all bad, if the Big Bad White Wolf obviously has to work on some things, since it's being passed so overtly by Asian Wolves, from the Northeast of Asia in particular.
Perhaps like Amy Chua said, we need more "Tiger Moms"?
But as to the report, Asians aren't a group usually talked about in terms of immigration, although they ought to be, not only because of numbers, but because of what they show as to what is a curious feature of race in America, if not the one usually discussed.
