Bio
Married for thirty six years and the mother of the two grown children, I began writing at the age of ten. My first success was winning a poetry contest in grammar school. From that moment forward, I realized that the written word was as vital to my survival as food and air. I am presently working on two books, one of which I hope to finish before I die. A number of my poems have graced A Long Story Short, and I have been published in the Lucidity Journal. Each day inspires me...what I see, hear and experience.... if it stays in my mind, I write about it. __________________________________________ "To believe in something not yet proved and to underwrite it with our lives: It is the only way we can leave the future open." Bandit Run Roars Into Jupiter, Florida

Rate: 9 Flag

The Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum to Host Bandit Bash

On May 15, 2007 a caravan of Trans Am fans recreated the rip roaring, adventure filled trip from Texarkana, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia made famous by those two lovable bad boys Burt Reynolds (Bandit) and Jerry Reed (Snowman) in the Hollywood hit, “Smokey and the Bandit.”  Three years later, the “Bandit Run” has become an annual event. This year’s convoy, totaling over 85 vehicles and a replica of Jerry Reed’s 18 wheeler, starts out in Braselton, Georgia and finishes in Orlando, Florida. Along the way, they will stop in Jupiter, Florida, the home of the Burt Reynolds and Friends Museum, for the Bandit Bash.

Wednesday evening, May 19, 2010 from 5 pm to 10 pm, the town will be rocking under the Indiantown Road Bridge as bands such as local favorite Cooper Getschal and the Beach Boomers strike up a country beat. Also performing will be The Art Mann Band and the Trailer Trash Band. A Burt Reynolds look-a-like contest, food vendors, a memorabilia auction and admission to the Museum will round out the event. For those movie-loving fans, the Bandit’s own bandit car will sit center stage. At $15.00 per person, this is the perfect venue to kick summer into first gear.  Tickets will be available at the gate.

When asked about the lasting impression made by the “Smokey and the Bandit” movies, director, Hal Needham, said,  “Just think, it all started with a truck load of Coors and a black Trans Am. Burt, Sally, Jackie, Jerry & Fred – who would have thunk it would amount to this?”

Ever humble megastar, Burt Reynolds, said, “I am flattered and honored that so many Bandits are still around. I wish Jackie and Jerry were here to see the Bandit Run and I sure hope you all have as much fun as we did making the films!”

Mark your calendars for May 19th. Be sure to top off the tank, click your seat belt, depress the gas pedal and steer on over to:

Whatever happened to ole Burt? I mean 30 years ago.
Leon,

He's still around. Just had a street named after him in West Palm Beach. His health is improving and he's teaching his Master Class at the Institute twice a week. Some movie projects are in the works.
Didn't Burt suffer from Trigeminal neuralgia [what my husband has]? What is his health improving from?
Deborah,

Burt has suffered with back pain caused by his many years of doing his own stunts. Recently, he had heart surgery but his recovery has been amazingly quick.
This is too funny! I hadn't heard about Burt in a while.
Donna, To me what was cool about BR is that the guy on the screen was pretty much the guy off. His youth is what legends are made of; his love of FSU and its football the same (FYI: I am a rival FL Gator). It was that laid back style that always endeared his movies to me ... even Evening Shade. The guy's just cool, despite (or maybe because of) his love life. He is so representative of the real FL originals. Wish I could attend! {{{R}}}
I never understood why his career tanked. What happened?
If anything? Hollywood's black hole?
Leon,

Health issues were mostly the culprit. The gossip columns just love to paint a celebrity as "dead" long before they are fitted for a coffin. Thankfully, BR is alive, well and working again.
Now you make me wish I had seen the movie:)
It's not too late, Roger. Some Jiffy Pop and a few beers can make a Saturday night extra special.....that and the right person to enjoy it with.
Was a time I would have been right in the mixx. Still sounds like fun.
Excellent reporting as usual. Rated.
Wait. Does this mean I can speed? Wait. Use speed?
That's sounds fun, I love those old movies!
