BURT REYNOLDS INSTITUTE FOR FILM & THEATRE
New class offers insight into how and why playwrights write as they do
Jupiter, Florida: Kelly Dennehy, Executive Director of the Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre (BRIFT), announced the new summer class schedule, including "Evenings at 7" - Emerging Playwrights Workshop. For four weeks beginning Thursday evening, July 21st, actors and non-actors alike will meet to present and discuss selected scenes by cutting edge American playwrights. Included will be Seth Rozin's Black Gold, a biting satire about role reversals, greed and the American dream; David Lindsay-Abaire's Rabbit Hole, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in drama and Theresa Rebeck's Mauritius, an absolutely riveting thriller revolving around one of the world’s rarest stamps.
Moderated by Sherman Roberts, a BRIFT Master Actor who has appeared in a variety of roles on stage, film and television, these evenings are designed to be a fun and engaging way to enjoy the work of contemporary writers while fostering an understanding about style and how each playwright communicates with the audience. The final class will feature a staged reading of selected scenes presented by the workshop participants.
Classes begin on July 21 and continue on July 28, August 11 and August 18. There will not be a class on August 4. Classes begin at 7 pm and will last approximately 2 ½ hours. The cost is $75.00 for the complete series, payable on the first night of class. Due to the popularity of this class, interested students are asked to enroll by Monday, July 18th at the latest.
Roberts also teaches Fundamentals of Acting on Sunday afternoons at 4 pm. The class is open to all performers but is especially beneficial to novice actors wishing to learn and perfect the finer points of thespian technique.
