Bio
I teach writing at several universities. My two daughters are five and 16. I adore my children, have trouble raising them, and you will read more about them than you care to. I am a cancer survivor. I was born and raised in Arkansas. I am addicted to Starbucks black iced tea. "What if it's boring... or if it's not boring, it might be too revealing, or worse, it might be too revealing and still be boring." Lily Tomlin referring to her teenage diary, in an interview in Movie magazine (July 1983) "The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt." -- Bertrand Russell "I'm teaching myself to live without sleeping because I don't trust my dreams." -- Jon Stewart on the Daily Show

weird sisters

The weird sisters, hand in hand,
Posters of the sea and land,
Thus do go about, about:
Thrice to thine and thrice to mine
And thrice again, to make up nine. – from Shakespeare’s Macbeth

School Daze

Gotta get to work.  Yesterday was my long day and at 4:45 thirty minutes before the last class was over I came face-to-face with crazy and desperate.  Not for the first time and likely not for the last.

We were having a "fascinating" discussion of the vagaries and wiles of… Read full post »

What I discovered when I discovered www.someecards.com.

Very funny website for email cards.

And no one paid me to post this ;0)

hmmm . . . all this cynicism might be bad for me?

And they wonder why I don't do family Thanksgiving?

I am one of the women under 50 who would not have had the annual mammogram -- my first -- at 45 which found the cancer if new proposed guidelines were in place.

Seems only a small percentage or women are saved through mammograms at that age.

Glad to know how… Read full post »

God and Todd

This is what they were fighting for.

God and Todd.

God and Todd

Please haunt Sarah Palin at midnight.  Send her the ghosts of feminists past, present, and future.

Or perhaps Sarah Palin could watch this and learn about Jewish tradition.  It is called Todd and God.

They Made Me Do It: The Pathetic Defense

There are many reasons why I do not believe Sarah Palin is qualified for national or IMHO even local or state office. Those reasons have been discussed and debated to death by others.

Leaked sections of Palin's autobiography which will be officially available on Tuesday have bee… Read full post »

Friday Night Contemplation

Having a wild Friday evening grading papers while listening to my John Hiatt Pandora station which has introduced me to Mark Knopfler's A Place Where We Used to Live.

Lovely song.

Just contemplative tonight.  Had a mammogram and ultrasound today that were clear.  Eighteen months of being ca… Read full post »

My mind has not been on OS today.  As several of my last posts reflect I have a real concern about the atmosphere in the world away from OS concerning Muslims as well as all who serve in the military.  Many of my students are Muslim.  Many are in the military.… Read full post »

I get teased for it but when travelling long distances I like to stop at Cracker Barrel for surprise iced tea, fried okra, and those corn muffins.  Sometimes I pick up something odd from the gift shop due to weird compulsions I don't even understand.

What year is it?

When waking up from anesthesia after surgery and when admitted to the emergency room this is one of the questions the physician or nurse has asked me when trying to determine if I am all there.

It is 2009.  Today is November 8, 2009.… Read full post »

Yikes! How do I make an ad go away?

Google has an ad for 20% off custom written student papers on my last blog which is rather anti-ethical to what I do for a living.

Does anybody know how I go about contacting them to make that ad go away?

I don't think that plagiarism is illegal in any state… Read full post »

Alligator Point 2
This is a photo of the sun doing some shit over the Gulf of Mexico at Alligator Point, Florida.  I used to live there.  It can be pretty.  However, Forbes magazine recently reported it is one of the top ten most polluted beaches in the United States.
