I teach writing at several universities. My two daughters are five and 16. I adore my children, have trouble raising them, and you will read more about them than you care to. I am a cancer survivor. I was born and raised in Arkansas. I am addicted to Starbucks black iced tea. "What if it's boring... or if it's not boring, it might be too revealing, or worse, it might be too revealing and still be boring." Lily Tomlin referring to her teenage diary, in an interview in Movie magazine (July 1983) "The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt." -- Bertrand Russell "I'm teaching myself to live without sleeping because I don't trust my dreams." -- Jon Stewart on the Daily Show

Today's Goal is Restoring Sanity Through Small Steps

Rate: 14 Flag

Today is when I am starting to restore some sanity about money and health and needing STUFF  to my life through small steps.

1. I am halfway through cleaning the closet and throwing stuff out. There is a lot I have not worn in two years because it no longer fits and will never fit again (small baby girl t-shirts -- no), is no longer in style, or because well for a year or so most of the time all I needed was pajamas when I was working from home while dealing with illness.  Every time I opened the closet I felt discouraged and it is time to just get rid of stuff.  I also got rid of many shoes and purses.  My feet have changed and my love affair with high heels is not a healthy one right now.  I am also going to Arkansas next week for a few days and all my cold weather clothes were in there somewhere.  I found them.

2. I am on a diet to eat more healthy and fewer calories, as well as to eat what is in the freezer and pantry so I can make better choices in the future.  Thus I am combining some frozen shrimp with some frozen steamed vegetables for lunch.  I have a feeling those combos will get a little ugly the further I get into eating through the freezer ;0)

3. I need to drink more water and less of everything else although I am never ever going to give up the iced tea ;0)  It is my major vice.  We also have about 10 huge jugs of bottled water bought for a hurricane season that was calm.  So I need to drink them for reason #2 as well.

I hope to be leaner and smarter in six months.  One can dream ;0)

I can't imagine you ever giving up your iced tea. I can't wait to hear about your "freezer combo" meals in the future.....! xoxo
dream a little dream....
Cleaning out your closet can be such a liberating experience. Best wishes to you in your quest to be "leaner and smarter"!
You never know, the deeper you get into that freezer, the more you might wish you'd have kept the shoes to eat. Good luck and good health!
I see "Iron Chef Dorinda" coming to a foodie Tuesday soon!

That closet cleaning stuff can be very therapeutic! You go for it!
You know what they say about OS. If you post it, all your dreams will come true!
The nutritional boost alone should raise your spirits! We're doing that right now too.
I have been doing the food removal thing too. Gotta tell ya; nothing like hominy and carrot soup! But you gotta puree! Anyway, it's redeeming to do "Spring" cleaning in the Fall. Look at all the time you'll have come Spring. :>)

Keep up the good work, you can do it!
excellent ideas! May I make one small recommendation? Walk every day. Nothing strenuous, but even walking only 20 minutes a day you will be amazed at how quickly it starts to change your body.

we all buy too much in this country.
leaner and smarter - worthy goals!
Hmmm. Water. I don't think I drank any today. That's probably a bad thing. Rated for being good to yourself.
I'm sort of not well, and I'm embarking, VERY VERY slowly, onto a macrobiotic diet. First one meal. Then two. Then the whole hog. ER, so to speak, as the macrobiotic diet will not be including hog. Pretty much fish and a teeny bit of chicken. Vegetables. Sea vegetables. (oh boy.) Seeds. Fruit. Tea.

I already got rid of almost everything I owned when I moved South. It was both painful and liberating.

I wish you much success. Whatever you do, I think you're extremely great right now, so there you go.
