There is a lot of this broke business going around ;0)

Rate: 17 Flag

This is a picture of the man I wanted to marry when I was fifteen-years-old.  My love was unrequited.  His current 40-something-year-old self is holding a photo of his 20-year-old self.

Willie

The man is Willie Aames who played one of the brothers on Eight is Enough.  He was the middle brother sandwiched between the handsome hunky older brother and the uber cute younger brother.  There was a soccer player at McLean High School who somewhat resembled Willie and I had an unrequited crush on him as well just because of the resemblence.  I apologize 20 years later for following you around Mike G.  You looked good in shorts.

So much of my love is unrequited ;0)  My first husband was however named David and had a strong resemblence to the actor Grant Goodeve who played the hunky older brother (on his good days when he was cleaned up)  so I did all right.

Anyway Willie is broke and broken down. You can read all about it at this incredibly long URLwhich I should know how to link.

He now of course has a reality show called Broke and Famous.  I have not seen it as my reality viewing is limited to American Idol, Amazing Race, Project Runway, and my beloved Design Star (I now crush on Antonio) which is more than enough for anyone.  However, Broke and Famous seems somewhat derivative of another reality show starring one of Willie's former colleagues called Scott Baio is Forty and Still Single.  Those reality producers in Hollywood must stay up late at night coming up with names for their shows.

I did not watch the Baio show.  However, I was woken up by a somewhat tearful phone call from a male friend and former co-worker who did watch the show in the wee hours of one morning. My friend was single, 40, and perpetually running through girlfriends as such a man living in Miami with access to college co-eds might be wont to do.  My friend was watching the Baio show and had convinced himself he would die childless, alone, and unloved.  He was also furious that Baio did not see the loveliness that was a long-suffering blonde girlfriend willing to listen to endless tales of Charles in Charge.  My heartless advice to the friend was to sober up by drinking some coffee, to stop watching Scott Baio is Forty and Still Single, and to be nicer to the lovely artist from Argentina he had been dating.

I am not broke nor famous but much more likely to become the former rather than the latter.  So I do not think I can watch Willie's show.  That and it will really really hurt to see my childhood love reduced to cranky old man  on a humiliating reality show.

Willie.  I am so sorry. You once co-starred in a movie with Phoebe Cates. Those were the days my friend . . . .

All very upsetting as Willie Ames portrayed one of my best ever friends on that show, Eight is Enough. Yeah, it was a real family and the real life story was a lot different than the TV show (surprise). The character that Willie Ames portrayed is dead and the world missed out on a great thinker and humanist. I'm still pissed off that my friend is dead and that asshole willie ames is acting like people owe him something.
I very rarely watch reality shows, especially ones about 'Ex tv stars' from my childhood. It's like, NOOOOOOOOO!!

I want to remember them how they were back then, during the cool days.

~nodding~
Everything changes. And men/boys who look good in shorts make the world a much prettier place. I also had a major crush on Grant Goodeve, what a hunk!
Dorinda and ablonde---that is quite a connection. I don't think, in a million years I could have imagined posting on this and then finding someone who knew a story behind the story of 8 is enough. . . .
Didn't Willie play Bibleman for a number of years? I won't comment on that at all. But it's weird, this culture of "famous for being famous."

And, just to say it: Top Chef is the other reality show worth watching.
You know, I haven't seen the Willie Ames reality show, but I have to say, people should understand from the outset that fame is not guaranteed. It can be lost, and they will be as boring as the fat former high school quarterback who sits drunk telling everybody in the bar stories of what he used to do. Ablonde has a point on this one, though I guess society does set people up by treating a famous person like God and spoiling them.
It sort of reminds me of the Monkees. That one became a producer, moving on, while the others tried to relive the group. You always need a plan b.
I loved Eight is Enough and I loved Willie and the Grant Goodeve character. You have good taste...American Idol...countdown to January...although they won't give a starting date. Never heard of "broke and famous"...I don't think I could stomach it.
Hollywood should have a home for has-beens ... complete with psychiatric therapy and job counceling. If you're a nurse and you lose a job nursing, there is high probability you can get work elsewhere as a nurse. Same for teacher, salesman, truck driver, and so on. But what comes after being a star? For many, booze and drugs, it would seem. Interesting post Dorinda ... but I'll be missing the show, too. [[R]]
Ha! Willie's got a show. I doubt he's doing it for nothing. I can teach him a thing or two about being broke. He's not even trying.
I don't have TV, and what I watch is on Hulu. But TV was part of my survival as a kid, and Willie Aames was a crush for me too. I wonder how it feels to be on a show like that and then be booted into the world of has-beens. Their should at least be counselling for child stars when they lose their cuteness. Rated.
Poor Willie... I know his fame and fortune faded fast... I crushed heavy on Kay Lenz and Susan Dey. Oh the dreams..... ~R~
Well unfortunately he'll have plenty of company. Apparently all of these uber-rich stars that go broke are unable to keep and maintain a savings account. How about a reality show where they are forced to spend 8 weeks with a financial planner?
Yep, and my unrequited love is Cissy from Family Affair. Don't know what happened to her either. As another who is closer to broke than famous, I can seriously empathize.
Rated because this post is far better than yesterday's.
Just as an aside to Delhia: Mike Nesmith of the Monkees ( the one of which you speak) not only went on to be a producer but founded MTV. Not to mention that his mother invented liquid paper (white-out)
Anyway, I had a big crush on Laurie Walters who played Joannie on 8 is enough. Loved the post
I liked the older brother better.
Jeezus. I was just spilling about this 30 year Willie Aames lust and how in the hell could he have become some homeless scary man and then I go to the equally scary Wikipedia to type in Thomas Braden Eight is Enough and what erupts but Ablonde's deceased friend (I am sorry), the OSS, the CIA, an open marriage, friggin' Nelson Rockefeller. Read it yourself. It can't all be true but it is fascinating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Braden

Look. I had a crush on Willie Aames. My friend let Scott Baio's weirdness freak him out.

And Mike G. looked damn good in shorts. I am not backtracking on that.

Those were my points ;0)
I have to laugh Dorinda (Tommy would), the real 8 is Enough family was so different than the TV one. I bet your jaw dropped when you looked them up. It's pretty much all true, and there is way more...
Hey, I'm with ya on the shorts.
Don't forget, Tommy was named after his Dad. Some of you may remember him on CNN sparring on the first incarnation of Crossfire back in the 80s.
I can't believe how lame that song is.

And the Braden back story just goes to show that truth is always stranger than fiction. To think, they wasted all that time showing how one sis couldn't find a talent for the Beauty Contest and ended up rolling hair & putting on make-up for her talent. (That's the only episode I actually remember).
The song is so very very lame and just too lame for church even now. Somebody got paid to for that.

Unbelievable.
. .. like bright and shiny new dimes.

WTF?
