Okay, perhaps the title is a tiny bit overblown but it is true that Forrest Gump has been chosen to hit the reset button on the repaired Large Hadron Collider when it starts up again in September.
You remember the $6 billion particle accelerator that sends beams of protons careening around a 17-mile underground ring forcing them to crash them into one another in order to re-create the immediate aftereffects of the Big Bang, don't you? Those smarty pants scientists say they just want use it to learn more about the origins and workings of the universe, but there are lots of not so smarty pants nutters out there who think it's just a big machine that will create a black hole and destroy the Earth.
Part of me wants to think that Hanks was chosen to flip the switch to restart the LHC because his character in Angels and Demons saves the Vatican from being destroyed by antimatter stolen from CERN, but I'm pretty certain he's still pissed about his Oscar loss in 2000 for Cast Away and now he's plotting his revenge on us all. Damn you, Hanks!!!

Tom Hanks?
And I don't like it when *scientists* say there's only a teensy-weensy chance things will go wrong...
This clearly is a publicity move for both parties; Hanks and the Scientists.
I’m a little surprised that THIS post rates an “Editor’s Pick”. What is so intelligent about this post that it rates special attention from the editors? This is pathetic.
The subtitle of the article reads,
"Tinseltown goes to CERN as Tom Hanks promotes latest thriller."
So, what was the point of this post? I have been known to be rather dense at times, and this may be one of those times.
The point is I was having a bit of fun with some news I stumbled on and then blogged about it here on my, um, blog! I'm really very sorry that your Bush War Crimes post was passed up for an editors pick and my "pathetic" little piece was chosen. These things happen dude, and you just gotta deal. Good lord, I'm so over this. NEXT!
So, once again, my denseness has blinded me. Thanks so much for your intelligent post and explanation.
I'm especially glad that OS editors had nothing better to put on the front page.
Pity when something like that happens and sort of makes the whole thing overblown, isn't it?
And speaking of overblown, I don't think there are any serious physicists who believe there is any danger in the collisions that will occur in the LHC. According to my son (the physicist) the sort of "black holes" that might be created are similar to what is created naturally every day on a subatomic scale. Or something like that. He'd have to give you the details.
I think people freak out because we have a sci-fi view of black holes. They start out infinitesimally small and eventually consume all existence. (Kind of like children.) Oh, and they never disappear.
Neither of those things are true, of course. On the other hand, I think you are on to something when you suggest that they figure if Hanks can save the Vatican from CERN's antimatter, he can save the LHC from anti-science.
You are right about my approach, and I apologize to Dorsey and all for my abrasive comment. I could have made my point differently. My intent was truly not intended to attack you, Dorsey. I think if one reads my initial comment, my focus was on the aspect of this post receiving unwarranted attention, not on you personally. But I can understand how it was construed as offensive.
I had just signed on, and saw this blog featured on the front page. Particle accelerator research interests me to a degree, and I thought this would of interest (especially since it was on the front page). I clicked on it to find this post, and noticed that it was also an EP, so I did, for a moment, think I had stumbled onto something truly interesting. Then I read it.
I understand frivolity; I have engaged in it on occasion, as we all have. That was never the issue.
Having said that, I can’t imagine that anyone, including Dorsey, would see this as a piece so deserving of so much special attention from the editors. OS currently has an abundance of talented writers who never get this much attention, and it does frustrate one at times when one finds so many things of this nature given so much underserved attention. In my initial comment I ended with, “This is pathetic.” That statement referred to the situation I’ve described, not to the blog, but I was annoyed and did not take time to make that clear.
Again, Dorsey, I don’t attack you in saying the above; I question the integrity of the “Editor’s Pick” and front page exposure awarded by the editors. In closing, and again without intent to offend, I actually found Susan Mitchell’s comment more interesting than the post to which she responded. But look at it this way, my whining has given your post extra comments and presence in the feed.
