The following post is purely speculation. My sources close to Andrea Mitchell told me nothing.
Don't think that Sarah Palin's latest move will hurt her in the future. Palin shrewdly declared that resigning mid-term is an example of someone who doesn't practice politics as usual (Americans hate politics as usual) and also made the claim that because of her efforts, Alaska's going to be okay and that Alaskans don't need her anymore. She saved the state with bipartisanship and now she can do more to help save America as a "free agent."
So barring any scandal, we must view Sarah Palins resigning from the Governorships of Alaska as the beginning of some sort of grand strategy. Most everybody is thinking that she's poising herself for a run at the White House in 2012 and that's a result of a media and a public who are severely lacking a decent attention span.
If Palin actually has some epic vision that is as strong as her ambition she'll look farther down the road before she makes an official attempt for her ultimate goal (the presidency) and a chance for absolute redemption.
Close your eyes. You can practically see the TV movie now. After her resignation speech stumble-a-thon and a self-inflicted exile from public life, Palin takes the Margaret Thatcher route and quietly goes about getting all "My Fair Lady" on us by transforming into a Barack Obama type of public speaker who can not only captivate an audience with natural charisma but with eloquence and well chosen words. She'll utilize those valuable skills in the private sector speaking for a ton of dough, a la Bill Clinton, and accumulate a huge personal war chest that will fuel whatever decision she makes next.
Palin would be smart to avoid running for the presidency in 2012 for the simple reason that the Republicans are in such disarray and it's going to take a long time before it's feasible for the RNC to even have a chance at repairing their party.
In her speech today, Palin highlighted the fact that she practices nonconventional politics, so you can bet she'll spearhead the creation of some type of conservative grassroots social media network to combat the online machine that Obama built as she attempts to be the catalyst of an inevitably long slog towards GOP resurrection. The fact that she Tweeted to her followers, "It is good, stay tuned" shows she's already started the ball rolling on the tech offensive, but building a competent online network will take some time. At only 45 years old, she' got plenty of that.
From the outside of the Party she'll put together a strong network of local political allies across the country to begin winning at the local level much like the Howard Dean plan did for the DNC during the Bush years. After accumulating political juice and more bragging rights of not being a Washington insider, she'll make another sacrifice for ordinary Americans by re-entering politics and running for Senate in 2014 against Democrat Mark Begich, thereby putting her directly in the heart of darkness where she can then slay the D.C. beast with the support of Joe Six-Pack on Twitter.
After serving two terms in the Senate and gaining much needed political knowledge, a much wiser Sarah Palin will begin her quest for the White House with a two-year head start of momentum and money to take on whatever Democratic leftover who ends up with the presidency after Barack Obama finishes his second stint. The always squabbling Democrats are very likely to be vulnerable after a decade of rule and a strong "Candidate Palin" will be tough to take on.
Obviously I don't like to speculate (wink, wink), so I won't try to guess Palin will actually win Election 2024 and become president, but I will wager that whatever happens, her presence will turn that election into one of the biggest media spectacles in the history of politics.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the North Korean missiles, Deborah. If they're anything like the South Korean Hyandais, they'll lose alignment quickly and splash down in the ocean somewhere. If they aim them at the middle of the ocean, that's when you need to start worrying.
I think she's just ambitious enough. Mitchell used a close source to Palin. That means it's a political insider - the only kind of Palin source that would be friendly with the media. From the news today, it sounds like Palin is purging all the political people she's been surrounded with. Leaking a false story to expendable staff who talks to the media is not inconceivable.
Add to the fact that she seems to be bat-shit crazy and more ambitious than anyone else in the GOP right now makes me think she wants to play the media instead of letting it play her. She knows they (the media) want her and now she's going to play hard to get.
@Dr.Spudman 44 - sweet jeesus, i hope you're right and i'm wrong.
I think she is taking a huge gamble, if she isn't resigning because of a scandal. I really don't see how cutting and running would be a good thing. I tell you what, you'd never catch Hillary doing such a thing. Ofcourse she'd leave an office to serve as president, but not before she was elected. I think the dems will have the upper hand, with her no matter what, after this. What rhymes with quitter?
