The John McCain's journey to the dark side is almost complete! Maybe you missed it but the current incarnation of a Republican once admired by liberal folks surfaced in San Diego to help out former campaign flack Carly Fiorina's bid for Sen. Barbara Boxer's (D-Calif.) seat by bashing her on defense. MCCAIN: "This person [Fiorina] will never waive the white flag of surrender the way that Barbara Boxer has tried to do every single time we have been in a conflict."
Oh, snap. After the rally McCain continued voice his opinions about Boxer's hawkishness as well as her bipartisanhip, this time to ABC News.
MCCAIN: "Barbara Boxer personalizes the political discourse that we have and that's why she's had so very little effect of any kind in the political process. There is no Republican that will work with her."
McCain's attack on Boxer's workability and hawkishness seems strange, considering...
#1) He's not a spokesmodel for bipartisanship anymore. Remember when McCain warned Democrats that they shouldn't expect Republican cooperation on legislation for the rest of this year? He wasn't lying.
and #2) Boxer's home-state colleague [and defense hawk] Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said in a June statement, “Senator Boxer and I have worked together for 18 years, as partners, in Washington — and there is no daylight between us on the issues that matter most to Californians." Californian's care about defense, don't they? I mean, why else would the Fiorina camp be making an issue out of it?
The most recent SurveyUSA poll has Boxer holding a slim lead over Fiornia who has been slowly closing in over the last few weeks but McCain's hard tack to the right has significantly depressed his value in blue California and this type of empty argument is just the kind of thing that could reverse Fiorina's progress.
