#4 “It’s not a question of enough, pal. It’s a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn’t lost or made, it’s simply transferred from one perception to another.” Gordon Gekko - Wall Street 1987
Is money enough to be considered successful in life? Are we in competition with those who make more money than us? I always believed that if I had money I would appear as the man that ultimately succeeded. Its interesting that we not only compete with our business colleagues for higher earnings, we compete with ourselves to make more money (well..most of us do).
The movie Wall Street, with the preface of money, intrigues an interesting point....Is money a perceptual transfer of status? Do we barter, trade, buy and sell based on our image of the value of money? If we could take money, distribute it evenly in life, would status remain competitive? I don't want to be level with someone who does half the work. I want to be successful with those who do the work.
Money does bring success to a different category in life. But, ultimately succeeding with money is playing your cards right. Working hard to play hard. Unfortunately I don't have time to play as I continue to compete against my colleagues. It is gratifying to say success comes to those who work hard, and once you play.. you have succeeded.
Case and point, life is full of winners and losers, the rich and the poor, the successors and the failures. Money is an attribute to success. Yet, look around, do you know successful people? I'm curious... what do you think they earn?
