#25 “Who are you trying to score points with? My parents? How many times have they had you over here since we moved? Try none until they went up Shit Creek and got stuck!” Tia - Uncle Buck 1989
We often at times compete our closest people in our lives.. our Family. We often at times compete those we love because we want and seek their approval. When we realize that, our competition is because we seek attention and we start to compare our intentions to those of the rest of the family.
If family is meant to be our security, why are we investing so much time in competing with them?
A family dynamic is where personalities, dreams, life and change go hand in hand. When someone can grow and change with confidence and acceptance, a family's score becomes tied. When one member of the family is exceeding at a pace that doesn't allow similarities.. the score becomes slightly out weighed. But, why are competing our own family? Are we trying to prove our worth, gain superiority, or be showered with praise?
When you can just sit across from someone and not talk, but know you are secure.. is that the end of the game? The end of the score keeping?
We can internally compete our family within the four walls we live, we can externally compete our extended family in the four walls of life. Am I competing my siblings for my parents approval even though we have all aged? Am I competing my spouse for their approval in our family that we've created? If we can just exist as equals..... we might be able to actually enjoy one another for face value.
Time, acceptance, energy, excitement, participation and dreams. All words that we seek in relationships and ultimately in our families. If we only participated in our families day to day, if we only allowed time for each other's dreams, if we offered excitement for our families successes, if we exuded energy in following our parents lead..... Would we win?
Its the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded, 3 balls, 2 strikes... you are down by 3. Who in your family would you want throwing you the game deciding pitch? Who can you count on? Would they choose you as well?
