#51 “My name is Joel Goodson. I deal in human fulfillment. I grossed over eight thousand dollars in one night. Time of your life, huh kid?” Joel Goodson - Risky Business 1983
Is all business, risky business? What denotes a deal breaker when it comes to bad business? As you look at business on a scale of acceptable and non-acceptable, is it safe to assume business is just business? When we shake hands and say, "deal", are we shaking our independence away? Have we become a transaction?
"It was great the way her mind worked. No guilt, no doubts, no fear. None of my specialties. Just the shameless pursuit of immediate gratification. What a capitalist" - Joel
I often wonder why entrepreneur fall so quickly into the business expose that success is inevitable. Fast acting gratification of success doesn't come from a title; it comes from patience. Owning your own business has its risk; succeeding at it, comes with reward. Becoming your own director, boss, or confidant, is better than punching a clock on someone else's time. But, if we didn't deal with competition in the business world, we wouldn't have business, we'd have boredom.
I work for you; you work for me. If we could all just work together would we want to? Why would I want to work for you?
I strive to become my own business shadow. I can foresee control and power. When I take that risk, I am one step closer to the reward. When its time to act; I've already completed my monologue. I am up on stage, in front of wall street, watching the buy and sell of stock. I am shaking hands, signing deals and drinking a stiff martini; as I laugh and say, "you'll never regret this decision".
Are we capitalists by nature?
Does anyone carry a briefcase anymore? I used to dream of carrying a briefcase. Walking into a tall building, into my office, overlooking the city. I saw myself behind a desk... yet I didn't know what I was conducting business for, but did it really matter? Is it a completely lame observation that I thought business meant you wore a suit?
"Joel, you wanna know something? Every now and then say, "What the fuck." "What the fuck" gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future." - Miles
So...what's your business? Are you risky? Do you wear a suit?
