"Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here." Mikey
- The Goonies 1985
Don't you remember being a kid? Wasn't it like you had no care in the world. Well.. at least no care that financially, physically, or mentally burdened you. Do you recall the greatest competition as a kid was actually finding enough time in the day to play, explore, invent, or build forts? Being a kid meant you had your whole life ahead of you. It wasn't an alarm clock, by the book, get to where you are going on time type of pressure.. it was just a sea of endless possibilities.
We learn as kids to be better adults. We as adults always seem to want to go back to being a kid. Are we competing to be twelve again?
Ok.. well not necessarily twelve, but you know what I mean. That carefree, lack of inhibitions, put on a smiley face kid. Our parents did and most likely still do what the best for us. We in return can hopefully expel that greatness to our generation and so on. But, if we are trying so hard to find our inner kid again, are the wishes we had at twelve being granted?
What was your biggest wish as a kid? Has it come true?
Did you want a specific girl to like you, did you want to learn how to drive, or did you want to never grow up? NO, we always wanted to grow up. We wanted to age so quickly. But, why? What made us want to be older? I look back and think, wow, if I could take back those years that I couldn't wait to learn to drive, or get a job, or get my first place.. what more could I have done with my childhood.
The world was a playground back then. Full of two square and dodge ball tournaments. First kisses and yes, the first time. Life was endless.
Are we as adults changing the landscape of our playground? Aren't we still playing two square? I throw you the ball, you smack it back to me, and vice versa. Isn't life sometimes just about a game of dodge ball? Dodging the consequences and risks we take? Are we really making every kiss count? Are we making sex more of a chore instead of that anticipation we once felt?
Life as a kid was simple, life as an adult can be simple too. The minute you realize that we are still the kid at heart, I believe the choices we make will not only be more simplistic.. they will be more enjoyable. We stop wanting to grow up when we realize we've grown up too fast. We stop wanting to try when we realize the forts we've built have more of a chance of tumbling down.
