If we all just lived a little; let the game play itself; would we be as lucky to win at each given opportunity? Some athletes excel at such a skill that even they can't beat themselves at their own game. When you are a young prodigy you are skilled beyond all recognition; you are practicing perfection at such a different caliber than your peers. When you get on the court, the course, or on the field, the competition awaits within yourself; the competition is stronger than your opponent.
"I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball." - Ty Webb
If we want something so profound; can we get something more out of the mission? All we have to do is think about the way we see the end result. If we view ourselves in a winning position; are we winners? If we view ourselves as defeated; do we ultimately lose? Caddyshack brought humor to the amateur. Caddyshack brings life to a gopher. When we combine amateur and gopher with a comical cast; are we combining hypocritical golf standards to the novice?
Once we find ourselves entertaining; we find ourselves exploring people's interests, and ignoring people's digressions.
I recall knowing that if you seek success it only happens when you experience failure. You cannot experience something you've never had, unless you know what it is that you can compare it to. That comparison is the defeat of your own mantra. Golf is finding more and more attention these days. Maybe due to Mr. Tiger Woods, or maybe due to the underdogs who excel and surprise us all. But, I do know that golf takes practice and golf takes patience. Golf isn't just about obtaining that green jacket anymore; it is about entertaining the crowd and capturing the spirit of the game.
"Let me tell you a little story? I once knew a guy who could have been a great golfer, could have gone pro, all he needed was a little time and practice. Decided to go to college instead. Went for four years, did pretty well. At the end of his four years, his last semester he was kicked out... You know what for? He was night putting, just putting at night with the fifteen-year-old daughter of the Dean... You know who that guy was Danny?"
Maybe that guy is you, maybe that guy is your friend. Either way, the choices we make set us to believe that we either go pro, or we keep our dreams as our hobby. Because, literally, aren't we number 1 at our hobbies?
