"Far and Away" 1992

I once heard that if you've had chocolate cake, its hard to go back to brownies. I, also heard that if you've experience frosting, its hard to have a cake without all the confection. I've heard far too often that cake should be meant for dessert; yet it just sometimes comes before a meal because the craving is too intense to wait.
I indulge in cake; and I stay a safe distance from too many brownies.
But, when we need a fix, and when the fix is similar to an instant high for satisfaction; we must choose to stay far and away, or to be far, but not too near to the sugar seduction. People strive to compete battles within themselves because at some point you can never have too much cake, and you can't forget how great it tastes as it leaves your fork and enters your mouth. Ultimately, we test our cravings with the craving to challenge the mind over the pursuit of excellence.
Not every form of competition is about the winner or loser.
Sometimes the concept of competitive nature is people competing themselves against the world. I've been told that I compete the world more often than I complete the game of life. I've been told that I want the win, less than I want the loss. Maybe I am a hypocrite. Maybe I claim to find the need to gain a win in everything instead of settle for a loss because I am arrogant. But, at least I'm not waiting for the cake to be frosted; because brownies are just as satisfying, and I can find a way to add extra sugar to my life.
Think about the concept behind this movie; Far and Away. Was the country, or even the world, big enough for both people to find and house their dreams? It seemed like the dream had to be big enough to handle the world's expectations of the man, before it made a spot for them at the kitchen table. I found moments in this film that tested boundaries of ones own ideals. Joseph was leaving everything he knew for the only thing he ever wanted. Did he succeed? Did he find his dream?
"Maybe this is my destiny. On his death bed, my father told me he'd be watching me from up above. I wonder now if his spirit might be near, guiding me along." - Joseph
Destiny, dedication, hard work, resilience and hope make a man crave the chase of the dream. Leaving all you know, for what's unknown, is life altering and intimidating for each of us; yet we take hits, and we fall just as quickly as we get back up. I find superiority and direction a weakness for a man when there is nothing to win.
Are we chasing different dreams now? Are we finding that instead of staking our flag on our land; we are migrating from one spot to another in the hunt to obtain more status or better positioning?
Remember when we just wanted the little things in life? The tonka truck, the erector set, the bag of marbles, and sometimes just a few more quarters in the Pac Man machine? Life has somewhat evolved. People and the man have changed. We may have found our land, our country and our dream; but, if we have lost our inhibitions and gave up on what brought us here... are we settling for chocolate chip cookies?
Chocolate chewy chip cookies...(say that five times).
It may not be a bad choice, its just not going to taste the same without frosting. It just won't satisfy the craving of physical touch or take the cake of another ones heart instantaneously. Indulgences keep those we hold dear, close; and push us to stay far away from those who have forgotten what we have come to compete for. As the world begins to change, and we chose which battles we want to compete for, we add a cup of milk, or a scoop of ice cream when we need an extra get-up in our step.
