"I did a bad thing... "
Mark Bellison
The Invention of Lying 2009
I really enjoyed this film. You know when you just want to say it as it is; yet, you are afraid to get the reaction not intended? Well, think about your subconscious here, aren't we all lying to someone, somewhere? In a world where we want truth; we seek to find the easy route in our lies. I try to be as honest as possible, however, I know that honesty is earned, and reality is sometimes dishonest to protect the weak who can't handle the truth.
The question is; what is your biggest lie? Have you been lying to yourself this whole time?
This film opens up with honest truth in the 3rd person. Its another film about a struggling screenwriter, into the mindset that truth gets him nowhere, and lying is the newest great invention as he discovers he can get ahead by being deceptive. Yet, everyone in this false reality only knows the truth, and the lie is not thinkable in a world with absolute truth, so words, thoughts, perceptions and emotions are spoken out loud. When feelings are expressed without penalty, the human mind is faced with the honest truth.
This film is my egocentric subconscious nature.
I always think someone knows exactly what I'm thinking even though I haven't spoken. So, do we tell people we don't like them instantly? Do we tell people that they have no shot mentally, physically or emotionally in regards to a future relationship? If so, could you imagine their immediate reaction?
I don't know if I could handle a world of utmost truth where a society knows about honest truth and has no clue about lying. When Mark Bellison figures out a way to lie, the faith in the world's afterlife is unveiled through hope and gratification. The people want to know the path to all righteousness, yet, ready to believe someone who can't lie.
Do we hide our truths to cover up our lies?
If given the opportunity to say what's on our minds instantaneously; would we digress?
A man's argument is to never tell their lady they look fat, awful, disgusting or unbearable. Yet, if asked, do we ponder the truth or shoot straight for the hip? No one wants to miss out on potential relations later, so most likely the lips are sealed; the truth is hidden. I, on the contrary, wouldn't know what to say if the truth actually presented itself. What would be the consequence?
We save face, to avoid rejection. I avoid face, by hiding behind a microscope of lies. Who's looking into the glass?
So, speak up, right? I don't know. The truth hurts, but, do the lies hinder the value of the spoken word? If the invention of lying is to isolate the truth, is the invention of truth just to mask the lie? I don't see how lies could substantiate truth, when the truth we tell ourselves, is remarkably naive and immature.
Am I immature to think that lies are okay? Well.. don't tell me the truth... it might hurt too much. But, shall we tell the truth to avoid immaturity? Only you can deal with your psyche, and only those around you can adapt to the truth. When we fear the truth and its recourse, we sometimes wish the lies we've discovered faltered to become true. We wish we knew less than we knew before; because supposibly, what you don't know can't hurt you.

i do try to keep it professional though, not personal...the lying i mean. but its not always easy cuz ya know i have this condition...i'm a flawed human.
i have this wonderful ongoing argument with my best friend about lying. is withholding information lying? or is that a whole nuther can o worms?
scanner... DUDE!!! Just kidding ;-) Its hard to know whether or not we can survive in a world of honesty without knowing there is some sort of penalty. Yes, went straight to DVD; but, highly recommended. I was astoundly impressed.
Witholding information I guess is a lie; it just depends on if the information is critical enough to surpass the invevitable lie itself.
Ah.. heck; I'm lying.. it is a whole other can of worms. Thanks for your insight!!!!
Lying - it's a tough one. I try to do it as little as possible. It helps keep my life saner.
