"Where were you on that one, Dipshit?"
Happy Gilmore 1996
We live in a world where we want our independence, yet, we rely on others to kind of in a way, back us up when the going gets tough and the tough gets going. The individual wants to be in a team, but, when the team is least excepting; you are forced to stand alone and forced to find your own calling. Whether it be from a mentor, a novice or your inner drive; you stand up on your own two feet to prove your worth; because someone is always watching.
"I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not attractive." - Happy
I absolutely LOVE this film. I don't know what it was that made me think of Happy Gilmore this morning. Maybe it was the witty golf swinging amateur mastering a skill through patience and humor. Or maybe it is because people fight their image before they master a game, and end up finding their calling when least expected. Most times in life, image is everything, and our image dictates what we deem is everything.
"Hey, if I saw myself in clothes like that, I'd have to kick my own ass."
- Happy Gilmore
"Golf requires goofy pants and a fat ass. You should talk to my neighbor, the accountant. Probably a great golfer... huge ass." - Happy Gilmore
Labels drive stereotypes; humor drives a person to be-little. Life is about making it through the preconceived assumptions of our environment and coming out as the diamond in the rough. Happy Gilmore; hockey player turned golfer, golfed to save his mother's house. He found the patience that it took to play golf, exhausting and challenging. But, when Shooter McGavin was his greatest competitor he had a new mission.... kicking his ass and stepping up his game.
"I got into this tournament for one reason: money. And now I have a new reason: kicking your ass!" - Happy Gilmore
Haven't you realized that teams, individuals and fans root for the winner when the game has become the greatest rivalry for title? What is it about competition makes us more hyped up for the competitors versus a less than competitive match up? There has to be some sort of notion that makes the game much more interesting. The caliber, the expertise and the history makes the fan feel connected; and makes the fan feel like they are in the game.
Golf has never really been my game; but the skill of golf has become much more a part of the game in the eyes of sports gurus.
When Happy is mentored by Chubbs and when Happy lusts for Virginia; skill and determination become more and more similar in nature. Men want to be successful and skillful; men want to win the woman and excel at the sport. Question is: can a man have it all? As we take a look into competition of sports, confidence and drive in a man; we take a look into the prize and aftermath of the game when we win.
I could go on and on about this film. The hidden satires, the witty nursing home attendant played by Ben Stiller, the wise crack antics of Bob Barker and even the charismatic mentor Chubbs. Happy Gilmore is one of those films that can cheer you up, put yourself in perspective, and challenge you to test your will and your drive to master a game in which you assumed, had no meaning.
I will leave with this....
"My name is Happy Gilmore. Ever since I was old enough to skate, I loved hockey. I wasn't really the greatest skater though. But that didn't stop my dad from teaching me the secret of smacking his greatest slap shot."
Find yourself in the game, the competition and the drive to prove yourself wrong. Life is about challenging oneself to be the man you want to be, not that man someone else wants you to become. But, when taught a skill at a young age; find what is was about it that, that makes you an expert in what you have become today.
